Time capsule.

I've heard the song many times but didn't realise it was by Cher. Doesn't even sound like her!

Guess, the song.

White Rabbit. That intro is unmistakeable plus I always liked Grace Slick.
Not so keen on Janis Joplin though.

Here is one that takes me back to my college days

Sounds like they're trying to rip off Blind Faith's Can't Find My Way Home. The acoustics are extremely similar:

The 1960s seemly was the best time to live....

Certainly "War Babies" and kids born around 1945 had a good life, much better than their parents and grandparents.

Remake of the classic Gershwin song "summertime"

Superb post! Mate, I think we were both born a bit too late......

Here is one that takes me back to my college days before you guys were even born.

I think you underestimate how old some of us are!The song is not bad.

Sounds like they're trying to rip off Blind Faith's Can't Find My Way Home.

Your ears are very sharp!I would never have made that connection, but you are spot on!

Time to go back to the Blues and Hard Rock in this thread......So, women can't play electric guitar?How about this Anglo French girl?

Here is another woman who can't play electric guitar.... LOL!!!!This is Sophie Lloyd, she is British.

My last post is from Cam Cole, he is a traveller from London, England......

OK, some of you may not like the subject of my posts tonight,but he turned himself from a Punk Rock loser into a Rock superstar and a multi millionaire!
He realised that Punk Rock was not the way to go and leant towards Hard Rock and Electronica and it worked!

This is Billy Idol.....

This was an absolute classic!

What Billy Idol did brilliantly was to capture the mood of the 1980's..... I was in my twenties back then and he got me.... how about you?

Can the world return to beautiful songs

I know what you mean.

The 90s were a different time, more optimistic and songs full of sunshine and hope for the future filled the air....

Can the world return to beautiful songs like this:

Me too
The 90s were a different time, more optimistic and songs full of sunshine and hope for the future filled the air....

Yep, they were certainly that. And then the internet came along.

Can a song possibly be any more French than this.

A Classic!

For me, that was the 80's and the song you posted was awful BTW!

I can think of a few that would come close, but yeah..... that is VERY French.....

This one must be up there. I first saw the film in the mid 80s in the early days of Channel 4 when they were more arthouse and less big brother. I watched that film with a dropped jaw. The other Jacques Demy film, the one about Cherbourg is pretty good too.

It doesn't work as an embedded youtube link so here's the address: youtube.com/watch?v=xCkQrDKYaJA

Edith Piaf - Non, Je ne regrette rien

Je ne regrette rien

My favorite by here has always been Milord

The rapid changes in rhythm and emotions are so bound up in French femininity and that irresistible bright sounding chorus with maybe the saddest lyrics of all

I know you Milord,
You've never seen me,
I'm just a girl of the port,
A shadow of the street

@jon357

Sorry Jon, that one did not do it for me.

It's a classic!

If you insist.

I shared a couple of pints with the Butthole Surfers at the Roxborough pub in Harrow just before they went on stage.
Great guys, terrible band.......

Edith Piaf - Non, Je ne regrette rien

Not one of my personal favourites, but a classic?YES!!!

My favorite by here has always been Milord

Not bad......

I see that this thread is going very French and so thought it would be a good opportunity to post some of my favourite French songs.
In other music forums I post in, French music tends to be disliked.
In my youth, I spent a lot of time in France and have many friends and family who live there.
And TBH, my French is better than my Polish.
Here are a few French songs I love;
Noir Desir;

Zaz;

Time to cheer things up a bit.Manou Chao is French/Spanish but was a huge success in France.

Just to show more of France's multicultural experience, this is Faudel, a proud Frenchman of Algerian descent;

If you doubt Zaz's talent, here is one more go;

My last post tonight.... yes St.Germain are French...... if you liked my French music posts, please say so as I have a ton more I can post, if you didn't like them, please say so and I'l STFU!

What about Francoise Hardy?

jon357
24 Sep 2024  #268

Francoise Hardy?

Great minds think alike. Comme te dire adieu is somewhere above.

Tous les garçons et les files is a lovely song.

Here's a singer that's not as chic (or as dead) as Francoise Hardy, not as edgy as Jane Birkin, not as raddled looking as Edith Piaf, not as dim-witted as Mireille Matthieu, not as formerly male as Amanda Lear, not as sophisticated as Juliette Greco and not as French as any of them. But I did get a 'love react' from her on social media the other day and she does live a few doors down from a close relative. Apparently she's really nice and an all-round decent person. A very good voice too, and great on TV with a rare combination: no airs and graces at all yet still with a touch of glamour.

She's just nice; in Yorkshire we don't much like our heroes, in fact we tend to enjoy putting them in their place. Not Jane though. I've never heard a bad word about her.

She's best known for singing cover versions however this one's her own.

I remember her - she was a singer on cruise ships donkey's years ago wasn't she? Very nice, down-to-earth lady. Looks better now than she did in her early days. Probably would have been a massive star had she been born in an earlier era. I could just imagine her keeping the home fires burning during the war years, Vera Lynn style.

I love Jane Birkin - wonderfully dotty and no voice to speak of, but an absolute delight.

I also like France Galle.

As for the men, Serge Gainsbourg of course, Georges Moustaki and Jean Ferrat. The latter two I first heard when I was six years old thanks to my mother being a member of the Alliance Francaise. You could buy French records through them. I remember thinking that Georges Moustaki looked weird with his woolly hair and beard and that Jean Ferrat was 'nice' and looked like one of my uncles!
