also like France Gall

An interesting voice though a little off key in that video.

Sad in a way that she was taken in by Gainsbourg when she sang that song he wrote for her (because of her youth and innocence) that was full,of double entendres.

Here's one by Nosfell, a modern day French singer. I saw him live in Warsaw at that studio theatre behind the Teatr Buffo. He sometimes sings in his own made-up language that actually has syntax though nowadays he's switched to guitar rock. This one must be at least a decade ago.

Edit. You'll need to use the link. It won't embed for some reason. Looks like the problems at the PF end. youtu.be/EGdc5aABPGg

What about Francoise Hardy?

Yes, I liked that one, very old but very French.

@jon357

Jane Mcdonald is someone I have never heard of, she looks great for her age and has a superb voice.

@Atch

I agree with all your comments but your Francoise Hardy post was terrible..... she couldn't sing to save her life.....

Do you know this one, recorded at the same time they did Je T'aime.

Never heard it before.Very good, if you like French music,which I do. She was very French for a Posh English girl....

Kitsch and cheesy and this isn't the standard version of the music but there's a double record here. The piece (in its original form which is livelier and less faux-classical than this cover) was the by biggest selling modern instrumental artiste since chart history started, Paul Mauriat,, mostly due to his stuff being played in lifts, supermarkets and hotel lobbies as muzak. It's not IMO a good version of it, but it is gentle. The original always reminds me of Bryter Later by Nick Drake.

I might download it for my alarm clock

And the artiste is Geoff Love, born 1917 in Yorkshire. Best known performing as "Manuel and his Music of the Mountains". The record? He was for a while the biggest selling Black British Artist.

This is one from my Hippy Days in France when almost everyone could play this simple tune.
I have this album and still love it.

Nick Drake, Bryter Later. A wasted young life.

And his most commercial one, Northern Sky. He was from the Midlands and lived with his famous sister in London. I wonder if he ever came north.

Francoise Hardy

You mean France Gall ;) she was only a kid, singing live with an orchestra. Quite possible she couldn't hear herself properly in the monitors. You go off key when that happens. She had zero technique too and was singing with a throat voice which only works if you're somebody like Cilla Black. But it's a great song of its type and very much the spirit of the time. Sandie Shaw was another one who was mostly throat, very harsh sound at times, yet Puppet on a String is a joy. But this one is my favourite:

she was taken in by Gainsbourg

And she never spoke to him again, after she copped on, fair play to her. He had a very unwholesome side but he was gifted, a bit of a Byronesque character. Even in translation his words are special.

Noir Desir;

Good song.

she was a singer on cruise ships donkey's years ago wasn't she?

She's come back to where she started except now she presents on cruise ships instead of singing. She did a series of shows, ' Cruising with Jane McDonald'. She does a lot of work as a TV presenter these days. She's very popular with a member of my family.

It's not IMO a good version of it,

I've not heard the instrumental version of it before. I know the version sung by Claudine Longet which I posted on here a while back.

If you haven't seen Jane McDonald's Yorkshire (Channel 5, AFAIK still available for streaming free on the My5 website) I really recommend it. There's only about 4 episodes and they're pure TV comfort food, shown just after Covid.

A lot of nostalgia since her audience like that and she does it beautifully and she gets it all right. TV for boomers and pre-boomers (she's 61 so borderline boomer/Gen X) but not patronising. Just the right degree of nostalgia. She keeps off party politics but makes it clear that she's a miner's daughter who came up through the Working Men's Club ecosystem. She ends each episode with a song, one or two of them very modern and off her usual style.

In the opening sequences, you can see my roof for half a second!

the version sung by Claudine Longet

I didn't know that and had missed it. Thanks for the tip.

You guys seem to be going for old and cheesy, so I have two posts for you tonight from legendary French singers that fit that category.

Firstly, Charles Aznavour, who was of Armenian ancestry.I would have posted the French version of this song but all the videos I could find were naff and of poor sound quality.So, instead of "Elle", this is "She";

My second and last old and cheesy post comes from Sacha Distel, who was of Russian descent and this one is in French."Raindrops keep falling on my head" in English and "Toute la pluie tombe sur moi" in French.... a subtle difference, in the French version, ALL the rain is falling on him......

If you haven't seen Jane McDonald's Yorkshire

I haven't but I can watch it on My5. I do like her she comes across as being a really genuine person. I've only seen her on TV recently and that's due to someone else being glued to her cruise programmes.

you can see my roof for half a second!

Claim to fame!!

I didn't know that and had missed it

We had that song on an album in my house when I was growing up and I always liked it:

Originally it was a Eurovision entry for Vicky Leandros in 1967 who was representing Luxembourg.

@Miloslaw

WTF has gone wrong with my post?

I will try to repost.

Has PF blocked embedded videos again or is it just me? Youtube added s spy/tracking info after "si" so it's best to remove it. Ok it now should work with the tracking too.

WTF has gone wrong with my post?

It was like that last night, hence the repeated posts. I assumed it was due to the painfully slow internet here.

Perhaps it's a glitch in the system.

Originally it was a Eurovision entry for Vicky Leandros in 1967 who was representing Luxembourg

That version in the link is a lovely song.

Posts are working normally again... :)

Alain Stivell

Now that surprises me. He spent a lot of time in Ireland. There was a great interest in the connections between Breton and Irish music. An example is the Irish song Thugamar Féin an Samhradh Linn which was recorded as an instrumental by The Chieftains, though to me I think of it as a song which is how they first recorded it when they were Ceoltóirí Chualann.

I remember as a kid when my sister was playing it on the harp, there was chat between her teacher and my mother about the Breton similarities and definitely about Alain Stivell. I think my sister probably met him. I must ask her. She was a bit of a prodigy. I remember her working with Charles Guard. I'm not sure what the purpose of it was as to be honest, she probably knew more about Irish harping than he did at that time. I think he was teaching her musical theory.

Now for something completely different....

I was looking for music from the DDR when I came across this.... Czerwone Gitary singing in German! This was part of film called "Schlager einer großen Stadt: Rostock" (Hits from a big city: Rostock)

Did they do things like this often? Would this have been released in Poland? Did other Polish artists sing in German for the DDR?

Now I'm going to be looking for more stuff like this...

The connection is very strong.There is a part of Northern Spain, I forget where, that was also influenced by Celtic music.
I love your video post too.

that would be Galicia Northwest corner over Portugal, the most woody part of Spain (and the people have a reputation for being sad sacks... a Polish person working in Spain said she had a colleague from Galicia but the only time she ever spoke was to give people bad news.....

I used to work with a few Gallego people on board ship. They were pleasant enough but not party animals. A very guttural accent.

She didn't :) but she remembers her teacher and a few others going to his Irish concerts.

However I was right about Charles Guard. He was indeed her teacher of music theory at the College of Music in Dublin. She said he was a complete slave driver and made no allowances for the fact that she was the youngest in the class at thirteen years old. He was in Ireland to learn the harp and one of the harp fraternity, or to be more accurate, sorority, got him the gig in the College of Music . However, when she met him outside of college at a harp gathering he was completely different to the classroom. He invited to play his harp and sing something for him. She then invited him to do the same, which he did. They then went off to the kitchen and made the tea for everyone :)

Here you are maf:

Maryla Rodowicz - Marja

She's sung many others in German too.
