"Unwelcome"? Hahahahahahahaha...That's what I would expect from a leprechaun
And yet ................
"This evening I received a letter confirming the Russian exercises will be relocated outside of Ireland's EEZ."
Of course the fishermen were a help.
I suppose the Russians think it's a bit of good PR so everybody is happy.
simple Irish fishermen played Russia like a fiddle.
They're not actually that simple. We Irish are a devious bunch :)) It's all down to the gift of the gab. Basically it's diplomacy and it's something that Poland is shockingly bad at.
Read about Frank Aiken , the Irish minister for foreign affairs and the Irish Resolution ie The Treaty for the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons signed by all UN members in 1968. He started the ball rolling on that in 1958 - no joy, couldn't get it passed. So each year he returned to it until four years later it was unanimously adopted by all UN members. We had no diplomatic relations with the Soviets at the time but Aiken was invited to sign the treaty in Moscow and Ireland was the first nation to ratify that treaty. A tiny, very poor country as we were then, having such an influence on international affairs is most unusual.
jolly Irish fisherman (is there any other kind tbh?)
Irish fisherman are a fairly quiet bunch. You'd never realise how tough and courageous they are. The seas they fish in are treacherous and there have been many deaths. If you visit any of the coastal communities on the west coast of Ireland you'll find a history of men being lost at sea going back generations. That's why we have those 'fishermen's jerseys', you know the Aran jumpers with the cable twists. Each family had its own pattern so that when the bodies were washed up they could be identified.
