The thing is the Russian army moves by major roads and doesn't really control the land around them so AFAIK they've yet to bring a city under control... (shelling the crap out of it and surrounding it don't count).

Before it shows up here...The Russian POWs in Ukraine have every right to claim they were following orders. Nuremberg was for the decision-makers, not the German soldiers who had no choice other than to obey or be executed.

Poland and all East European countries have always been racist to a degree.
I have seen this in the UK.
East Europeans start off with very negative views of dark skinned people, because they have no experience of them.

NATO had an agreement with Russia that no NATO forces would be placed East of the River Elbe, and NATO has kept its' word. Putin did not justify his invasion with NATO expansionism or "rockets", he very clearly stated that he wanted to undo Lenin's "mistake" of granting Ukraine independence.

Had anything formal been agreed upon? Or is Russia reacting to a possible, maybe, sometime, sort of problem from the future?

Despite NATO assurances otherwise, even though former Warsaw Pact countries like Poland, the Baltic states, Bulgaria, Romania joining NATO to the Russians it was a bitter pill to swallow, they would learn how to live with it in time, Putin has always stated that Ukraine was the red line.

Putin is actually helping with NATO expansion by showing everyone what can happen to your country if you're not in NATO. He invaded Georgia and Ukraine (twice) proving that Russia is a real threat to it's neighbors, he also invaded 0 NATO countries proving that being a NATO member can prevent Russian invasion.

So NATO invited Ukraine in 2008 and Russia decided to wait 14 years and then launch a Blitzkrieg.... In what universe does that make any sense?

NATO was in the mix of reasons but I still say it's not the main one. His goal was/is the destruction of Ukraine and Ukrainian as an identity. That's what matters to him, he models himself on a (pretty stupid) Tsar, Alexander III and so he's trying to recreate some kind of neo-Russian/Soviet empire.
