Yes, in Russia it is understood that you never complain to outsiders unless you want to remain part of the national fabric. The second you do it - you become a nobody in Russia. This is what Kasparov, Kara-Murza, Galeev and others don't understand.

For a real Russian, to be cut off or excommunicated from Russia is similar to death. To Westerners this may seem like a mafia-style omerta - but this does not matter.

Between ourselves we can disagree to the point of going at each other's throats. One can hate Putin with the fire of a thousand suns, but it does not mean you will speak ill of him to outsiders. To paraphrase a certain somebody, "He's a son of a *****, but he's our son of a *****."

This is why Navalny, at least grudgingly, has deserved the people's respect. He continues a tradition of Russian political martyrdom, where you earn the faith of the people through struggle and suffering. If you want people to follow, you must show that you yourself can take punishment.
