-the better life for residents of Crimea has yet to emerge (and since it was funded by raiding pension funds the lives of many elderly Russians have certainly not improved)

There could be even 1,300,000 of them, it doesn't matter - the entire world sees that it's just a pathetic "muscle flexing". If they were to attack, they would have attacked already. Putin thought that the West would get scared of his toy soldiers, the West called his bluff and now he's just looking for a way to withdraw with face (or what's left of it).

Actually, Russia doesn't even have that many troops, and if they moved most of them to their western borders, it would be a great gift for the Chinese. :)

Putin is playing a game because his plan for a coup de'etat was publicly released before he could implement it. Interviews with his flunkies who were to take up positions in the government were reported, and now those flunkies are being hunted. Some troops pulling back is only a delay tactic until a new plan is formulated. In the mean time I am sure some people in Russian government and military will be disappearing under suspicious circumstances.

Funny thing about USA, since 911, intelligence gathering has become much better. They have been finding all the right douche bags in all the right places lately, and uncovering this plan to remove the government with little bloodshed is proof of great information systems. Now Putin left to form plan B or give up.

Ukraine never existed as state prior communists drawn the borders. But, historically, regions existed within what is now Ukraine. Two Serbian ethnic regions, to mention only. Also, Russians as people were constituted within Ukraine, in Kievan Rus. Then, parts of it were historically Russian land. Plus, parts of it were Polish land, too. Not to say that there are Ruthenians. Let us also ask Ruthenians what they say. Why ignore them?

Donbass is part of Ukraine. Getting into Donbass can be tricky but not too difficult if you have the right connections. Donbass is definitely not 100% pro Russian, Crimea is probably different though I have not been there. Donbass, the people I know there are really divided. One thing is for sure, neither side in Donbass is happy with the so called government.

I haven't been there so I can't say for sure, but a friend who has family there (and who doesn't much like the locals) says it would be one thing if the real local people there actually chose a side... instead they just complain and wait around for someone to feed them... it's a very passive, infantile and soviet mentality
