Btw, Yiddish wasn't an official language in any part of Poland, as far as I know. And yet in 1931 Yiddish was a native language for 79,9% Jews in Poland. They had their own schools where they learned it.

I think that Ukrainians were trying to prevent the East of Ukraine becoming Russia 0.2. I imagine they wanted the Russian speakers to be integrated better. Whether they could do a better job with that - I don't know. Probably. Maybe the changes should come more gradually. @gregy741, Poland isn't going to fight in Ukraine. Poland is supporting Ukraine the way it can - by sending weapons, humanitarian aid, by receiving refugees and by standing up for Ukraine diplomatically. And I hope Poland will keep doing that.

None of you mention the costs of speaking Ukrainian, or not teaching Russian. On the examples of countries like Georgia and Turkmenistan we can see how the younger generations can no longer speak or read Russian. What does this have as its practical effect? They are not able to speak to people their age in Kiev or Alma-Ata or Minsk or Moscow. 250M+ plus worth of people of the former Soviet space is cut off for them in terms of personal interactions, music, art, literature. They are not able to read the scientific works of their grandfathers, or publish in a language that will get translated and picked up by any foreign journals unless they do it in English. The accumulated literary massif of 100+ years of Russian language literature produced by their ancestors is rendered useless. All the books in all the libraries have to be replaced, all the scientific manuals have to be retranslated.

This gets especially grotesque when they change the alphabet to copy Turkey or whoever else is fashionable at the moment, as they have in Uzbekistan and as they are planning to do in Kazakhstan. In Uzbekistan's experience, 30 years into the experiment they have as a result an utterly confused population and dual signage and document flow in all official spaces.

For the citizens of these republics Russian was a window into the wider world as an official UN language spoken by 300M+ people, and one of the most published-in languages. Who will read a Tajik novel, or what hurdles does a Tajik physicist have to go through to publish his work and have it read by other physicists? How come nobody in the Netherlands is complaining about English erasing their national culture? Because they know that English is a window into a world of opportunities.
