Surzhyk is a language intermediary, more a way of speaking than a codified language.

None of you mention the costs of speaking Ukrainian, or not teaching Russian.

In Ukraine those costs would be minimal, especially since Russian is the language of the invader that wants to keep them trapped in Russian style backwardness. Ukrainian in the EU would have lots of support (and about as many speakers as Polish which is not too shabby).

as they have in Uzbekistan and as they are planning to do in Kazakhstan

Turkey's change to the latin alphabet was an absolute step forward, the vowel-scarce Arabic alphabet just doesn't work for Turkic languages.

Cyrillic works fine for Turkic languages and there's really no reason to change in Central Asia (similarly to Mongolian, cyrillic is far superior to the awkard mongolian alphabet.

The Uzbek latin alphabet is ugly and most the proposed Kazakh latin alphabets are similarly ugly (they already had a perfectly good romanization similar to but different from Turkish). But the proposed alpahbets are all just ugly....

You can always come to Poland to check :) Visiting Donbas would be a bit more challenging, I'm afraid...

@gregy741, that's a very generous assessment on your part. You're very upset about whatever Ukrainian government was doing to Russian speakers, but you're very lenient about Kadyrov, even though he's a tyrant persecuting his own people. You call it "overreacting at times". You know what it's called? It's called hipocrisy.

losing too many brain cells there

I think that you have lost far too many already.
You think Russia is justified and is winning this war.
You are wrong on both counts.
You are just another Polish traitor.
Sad to.see.

this is not how things work there. different culture, if you get respect as leader ,chechen follow you to hell. iff you insult leader or challenge him ,you in trouble

most accusations about hes human right record are just accusation. no evidence. and when he was on our side he was clean and beautiful. after he become putins ally, sudently hes bad and dirty . most accusations comes from some berezowski /chodorowski Nemtsov circles.well nemcov was killed

Russia is considering a new law that would hand 20-year prison sentences to battlefield defectors and others who volunteer to fight for foreign armies.
This is the latest sign of Putin's growing alarm.

And now all you Putin coxuckers what about Putin offering to open the Black Sea blockade if sanctions are lifted and at the same time boosting retirment payments 10% and raising minimum wages to try to offset inflation and a dying economy? All fake news right? Happy gulag biatches!

GefreiterKania

Russia blocks Black Sea ports and steals Ukrainian grain. They say: "You want to avoid horrible famine in the world - call off your sanctions.".

Now, consider this carefully. Consider this very carefully, because it shows you what Russia really is.

They are willing to murder with famine millions of people, mostly in eastern and southern Africa, to make the West call off sanctions (yes - those harmless sanctions that only strengthened Russian economy, made the ruble stronger blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda). This shows you two things:

1. the sanctions are doing their job despite Russians trying to persuade everyone otherwise

...but more importantly:

2. Russia is willing to murder with famine people who never did anything wrong to Russia and who have nothing to do with NATO, ban on Tolstoy or Donbas. They are willing to murder them just to achieve their political aims. Of course, Russia already has experience in genocide by artificially caused hunger (Holodomor), but if anyone had any doubts who are the bad guys in this conflict they shouldn't read fairy tales about the ban on Pushkin, denazification or spontaneous rebellion by oppressed Donbas population, they should only look at facts:

- Russia invaded an independent country whilst lying until the very last moment before the invasion that they have no intention of doing so (that makes them aggressors and liars, doesn't it?);

- from the beginning of the war they are commiting atrocities against Ukraine's civilian population; I won't mention the details, as they are too disgusting - especially those related to children;

- they have no problems with causing mass hunger and murdering millions of people who never did them any harm and most of whom don't even know where Donbas is.

That's it, people. No propaganda. No fairy tales. No poetry. Just pure facts. Observe and draw your own conclusions.

GefreiterKania
26 May 2022  #3139

P.S. Some numbers to consider: because of Russia's blockade of Black Sea ports as many as 1.7 billion people all over the world might face hunger (not Americans, Germans or Poles, but mostly people in poor southern hemisphere). The exact number of them who will die of famine is difficult to predict but Russia has a "good chance" to take the first place (by a mile!) in mass genocide. Forget the Third Reich, Pol Pot's Cambodia or any other small fish - Russia is going for "the win".

So, regardless of all the propaganda, misinformation, paid internet trolls and, in general, "creative approach to the truth", the entire world can see the facts. And I doubt even China and India will want to stand beside Russia after she commits the greatest genocide in Earth's history.

They very much do see and are involved. Another example of authoritarian states (China and Iran) terrorising the vulnerable. Another reason why we have to stop russia doing the same.

because it shows you what Russia really is.

This is clear.

not Americans, Germans or Poles, but mostly people in poor southern hemisphere). The

The knock on effects will be everywhere. There will be rationing in parts of Europe, there will be starvation in parts of Africa.

In Crimea, they proposed to exclude English from the school curriculum.

"Konstantinov wondered why to teach "what is not necessary, if a person will never go to London." The head of the Crimean State Council urged not to follow a foreign civilization, as this could be dangerous.

It can be dangerous for a student to learn English, Konstantinov noted. In fact, this will make him a hostage: the child will become interested in England, while the British "have been at war with Russia for a thousand years," the official explained."

dailybanner.co.uk/content/in-crimea-they-urged-to-remove-english-lessons-from-schools-and-develop-their-own-languages

:D

Right, Mr Konstantinov. You should also stop teaching physics - especially astrophysics: completely useless if a person will never go to the Moon. :)

But indeed, if England continue to behave, in a blink of an eye English can become completely irrelevant. I can imagine that. Introduce local internet on the level of one global civilization, computer programs in local global language, etc. Even Latin could be sent in total oblivion. Old Greek, too.

Hm... good point. Maybe they should stop teaching English? :) But then again how would people under totalitarian regime there have access to objective unbiased information without the knowledge of English?

mafketis
26 May 2022  #3146

how would people under totalitarian regime there have access to objective unbiased information

Most Russians don't want access to objective unbaised information. Most Russians want the tsar to take care of everything and just leave them alone. They are not remotely equipped to be able to make important decisions about the running of the country.

The Democracy threshhold is very real and Russia is nowhere close to reaching it.

GefreiterKania
26 May 2022  #3147

It is quite surreal though, all of it, isn't it?

First the invasion and atrocities under the excuse of denazification of Ukraine, which was idiotic in such an abstract way that it's still difficult to believe; then the decision, without a blink of an eye, to cause worldwide hunger that can affect as many as 1.7 billion people and kill hundreds of millions, and now on top of that the idea to stop teaching English, because Crimean kids will probably never travel to London. When you think of all of that together...

It's like something taken out of a retarded onanist's dream. Completely surreal. It's as if the real world ends on the Russian border and behind it the objective reality dissolves and something utterly different takes over...

I don't know how to put it...

Miloslaw
26 May 2022  #3148

I think you put it well.

The head of the Crimean State Council urged not to follow a foreign civilization, as this could be dangerous.

I never learned English except by self-education. In the school and in university I learned French. Because I come to school in 5-th grade after start of academic year due to move and only French class was not full. ;) English and German classes was full beyond reasonable capacity per one teacher.

Any problems with my English? Maybe you Russian is better?

I wonder what those pro-Russian separatists were doing in the Donbas region...

They live there. For centuries. Graves of their grand-grand-parents in this land. And before Lenin decree all this was Russian land, with fraction of malorossian peasants, migrated from central Ukraine to rich black soil lands that became safe after Russia stopped Crimean Tatar raids to supply slaves to Osman slave market.

So, if someone will come there and will start to tell how this people should live and which language use - it is sure way to get a bullet to some brainless part of body. Exactly what you observed in 2014. Odessa tried as well, but locals was much less successful there.

GefreiterKania
26 May 2022  #3150

Any problems with my English?

Not at all. Your English seems quite all right.

Maybe you Russian is better?

My Russian? I was never very much interested in Asian languages, hence I never studied the Russian language. I have nothing against it though, it's quite melodic and good for singing (it has this romantic sound to it - душещипательный :) ).
