Attacking Germany, though certainly a nice flex - is probably not good policy.
I think that the Germans are careful in their actions now, because they - more than any other European - understand that Russia has an uncanny ability to reconstitute itself. After all, they fought a war with Russia, where after the first 12 months every single reasonable person had concluded that Russia was headed towards certain surrender and collapse. Then, a few years after that, a red flag was being raised over the Reichstag. It's this precedent, I think, which makes them wary of making definitive calls on the current conflict.
In the same way, Russians have a good idea of what it means to fight Germans. Not exactly fun.
Sometimes Americans or Israelis ask me, why it is that Russians seem to have an unusually friendly relationship towards a country that killed 26 million of its citizens. The answer is not in that we don't care about our people and just appreciate anybody that will trade with us. It's actually even simpler than that. It's the grudging respect for someone that gave you a thrashing that brought you to within a millimeter of your end.
I know this will solidify in the minds of Russophobes that the only language we understand is brute force - but that's what it is. Germans have earned their right to be treated as equals.
