The Ruble is not 51 to the dollar because there is no free market in them - you cannot exchange or export them.

But russian currency doesn't display it's real value because it's not traded. It's value is like value of USSR ruble or North Korean currency, it basically has no value.

Much of the ruble strength is artificial. A foreigner can't sell rubles, only buy and any company which exports needs to convert 80% of value into ruble. If people could freely trade ruble, I'm sure that ruble would be worth less than Argentine pesos.

I doubt citizens of Kaliningrad would want to be part of Poland or Lithuania. There's just a million Russians living there.

However, due to Kaliningrad status as enclave within the EU, sanctions are much more painful for its citizens than for the other Russians. The living costs skyrocketed and the only connection with the rest of the country are very expensive air travels and very long sea travels.

My hope is that life in the oblast becomes unbearable to the point where they decide to secede from russian federation and go independent (in order to renew trade with all of their EU partners).

Then of course we can support their power move. And even offer them perspective of EFTA membership to whet their appetite for independence.

The official protocol is that they give them 180 days to get out.
