You are all talk.

Certainly not as talkative as you. I didn`t brag of going to fight in Ukraine only to take it back some time later. You did, darling. :):):)

@Velund
Get your boots ready

My boots is always

Yeah, but are YOU ready to fight with WW2 guns against superior weapons and better trained and motivated troops?

And did you see @Crnogorac3 photos of all those Cossaks coming to fight?

They were all old men and some of them not even in uniform😆

Your amateur radio skills may save you, if you can find a decent radio that works.....

How good is your morse code?

Just a reminder,.... Dot dot dot dash dash dash dot dot dot....is morse code for SOS!
You will need it my son.....

lol

Certainly not as talkative as you.

Sometimes I wish you were - at least in moments like this - to rub their noses a little ;D

According to Russian propaganda now Swedes are Nazis too lol:

You don't have to be an a$$hole

Nor do you ("lol and rolls eyes"). Remember, it isn't a debating club, and it's possible to talk about a topic without gainsaying. We probably have similar opinions on the matter as a whole anyway. And where we don't, it's interesting to hear differing poutines of view without rancour.

I don't think he has any "exceptional spiritual insight",...... he's probably also pretty ignorant

I'd guess that as Pope he probably does have exceptional spiritual insight and I'd not call him "pretty ignorant" either. If anything, far from it. I'd say that it's best not to jump to conclusions about why he does what he does, especially in an informal interview. It would be very different were he speaking ex cathedra which so far he has not on any issue, and of course nor did his last half dozen or so predecessors.

He may have strong opinions about NATO or he may not. His words may well have suffered in translation from the original Italian on the TV show and of course his personal opinion may be coloured by his own experience of being a citizen of a country that illegally invaded a territory belonging to a NATO country in a war they humiliatingly lost as russia is doing now in Ukraine. We don't actually know and it would be naive to expect that these are his last comments on the issue.

Jeder Schuss - ein RuSS! hahaha

There have been some amazing memes created in this conflict. As I've said before, this is not only the first European war of the computer age but also the first major war of the smartphone age, something invaluable in documenting materiel and human losses as well as capturing evidence of war crimes before the perpetrators can sweep away evidence.

And meanwhile, right now the orcs are pounding Mariupol with sea based weapons, firing indiscriminately and not caring that civilians are killed.

No need for logorrhea - a short but precise reply is enough - like Ukrainian javelin blowing up a RuSS tank. :):):) We have known each other for so many years so Iron perfectly knows what I mean. :):):)

@jon357, I think you're making a lot of excuses for pope Francis, that you wouldn't be making for Germany, for example, simply because you have a soft spot for him (because he's seen as this "leftist" pope or whatever). I think you're being biased/a hypocrite, to be honest.

it's best not to jump to conclusions about why he does what he does

I can only make an opinion concerning his attitude and actions based on what he's saying and doing. Just like majority of people. And I find what he's saying and doing disappointing (and it looks like I'm not the only one). I've already explained why. I'm not going to drag on this further.

We probably have similar opinions on the matter as a whole anyway.

Apparently not concerning pope Francis. So let's just agree to disagree.

I didn`t brag of going to fight in Ukraine only to take it back some time later. You did, darling. :):):)

I did not brag, I went there and came back. The need people with a military training and the reality hit me hard there. If they were short of people I would have stayed but they are not. Should I get there just that I could say here I told you so? Don't be stupid!

By the way - what it has to do with you being all talk?

jon357
3 May 2022  #848

I think you're making a lot of excuses for pope Francis

No offence intended, however, to be fair, you're the one who switched the discussion three times back to that TV interview.

As I mentioned twice, I doubt these ar his last words on the subject and there will doubtless be more said. Remember, he's older now than JP2 when he died.

Best agreee to differ as well as watch and wait.

And

No need for logorrhea

Quite.

It isn't as if there's nothing else in the news, especially tonight in Mariupol and the Kharkiv borderlands. Much is expected to happen overnight.

@jon357, you were pretending that you don't know what "rhetoric" is, so I had to repeat myself over and over again. You can get really difficult and stubborn when someone disagrees with you. As result I've wasted my time discussing with you the way I would waste it with Novichok, for example. That's pretty disappointing, considering we're on the same side.

watch and wait

I don't think I want to know what he's going to say and do anymore, to be honest...

3 May 2022  #850

I don't think I want to know what he's going to say

Me either. To be fair, interviews never air or publish everything said so he could be a bit.... misrepresented but I've been done with him a while (though since I'm not a christian, much less catholic) it's not my fight.

Another episode of insanity on Russian TV - according to some former film director people who are against the "Z" symbol should be put into concentration camps and sterilized:

you were pretending that you don't know what "rhetoric" is

N, however I did question your description of the Pope's words as 'rhetoric', which in my opinion it wasn't in that case.

You can get really difficult and stubborn when someone disagrees with you

And you can't?

Anyway, time to be nice, since orcs aren't.

This is a rapidly changing situation. As I said, I wouldn't read too much into unofficial pronouncements from people who aren't players. What I would suggest is listening carefully to anything and everything that comes out of russia, and also anything that comes via the SBU chief. Did you read the interview with Buryakov? He does have some very interesting points/ He also has intelligence assets all over russia (and Poland too as it happens)

Another episode of insanity on Russian TV

Yes. The only difference is that first time round, those who did it mostly tried to conceal it. I'd put this one in the same drawer as the guy who talked about using a Poseidon missile (which aren't currently operational) to create a 500 metre tsunami over the UK and Ireland (which would take teratons rather than megatons). Either they're playing to th home crowd or it's intended in full or in part for overseas consumption. Hard to tell.

Can you provide link for this please? re our previous conversation on tvp world, they have definitely upped their game, hired a few yank presenters and are interviewing the proffessors and geopolitics/defence experts from u.k/europe/usa, they focusing predominantly on the ukranian invasion and am sure are getting an experienced audience

In other news "Russia's parliament is reportedly convening for an extraordinary session on Friday in which it is expected to impose martial law, seemingly in order to clamp down on domestic protests and rallies opposing Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine."

Looks like word is getting out of the russian invasion disaster is getting out amongst the populace. I wonder if Velund will be drafted into the militzia to shoot civilians who break curfew?

A retired Canadian Forces lieutenant-general under investigation for alleged sexual misconduct is now in Ukraine.

Trevor Cadieu left the Canadian military on April 5, according to the Department of National Defence. He travelled to Ukraine shortly after with the intention to volunteer for that country's military which is battling a Russian invasion, multiple defence sources confirmed to this newspaper.

Please stop sending dollars and euros to Russia, or soon there will be nowhere left to hold it ;))

Seriously though, the ruble has strengthened to such an extent that there are concerns that the Russian budget won't balance. A weak ruble has benefited the Russian government for a long time (to the detriment of the average Russian's purchasing power), since every exported barrel of oil brought more rubles. This softened the blow of the early round of sanctions in 2014, and has allowed the government to run huge annual surpluses.

Now every dollar earned abroad converts to less and less rubles, which is what you need at the end of the day, if you are the Russian government, to pay for such things as pensions and the procurement of military equipment from domestic suppliers. The central bank is slamming the breaks hard by lowering the interest rate (at the beginning of the operation it raised rates from 4 to 20%), and easing the restrictions on people withdrawing foreign currency, but... for now at least the ruble keeps dropping.

A curious situation.

The bottom screenshot is of a telegram channel for currency exchange (you can see the spread between official and black market is around 15 RUB. 65 vs 80):

So - what?? You call that news?? The allegations date back to 1994!!! Nearly thirty years ago when he was in the military college. It's one of those cases you usually like to sneer at when supposed victims of abuse wait thirty years to say anything. And what does it have to do with the war in Ukraine?

I can understand your outrage though, seeing as 'sexual misconduct' is unknown in Russian society and particularly in the military.

Btw have you learned what a Briton is yet? Figured out the fact that Americans are not Britons??

He is being dealt with by the Canadian justice system - lawyers, evidence you know, the things Russia doesn't care about. Meantime he is a free man to go and shoot Russians or do whatever else he feels like.

As you well know it now seems the Russians have been raping men and young boys as well as babies.

Let me guess, the costs of caring for Ukrainian refugees.....account for this evaluation?

Probably massively offset by the gas still being imported there and wiped out completely by the arms sales to russia to help them invade Ukraine since the war started. Not that other countries don't have costs associated with direct payments, schooling, healthcare and "on costs" for civil servants involved. Let me guess, some countries put them in the public domain, perhaps on an 'inspection shelf' for measuring and weighing.

the ruble has strengthened

One reason that not a penny should go to them. That or some clever economist figures out a way to crash their currency, perhaps something involving 'cryptocurrency' which the orcs are by the way 'mining' furiously...

Time for a non-NATO state to blow certain pipelines. It will cause a crisis however if this war isn't a crisis already, what is?

Time for a non-NATO state to blow certain pipelines. It will cause a crisis however if this war isn't a crisis already, what is?

Somewhat counter-intuitively, Russia is quite likely to actually earn more money from its export of hydrocarbons AFTER a European embargo. Janet Yellen, who I'm hoping nobody can accuse of Russian sympathies, pointed this out a week or two ago when addressing the discussion happening amongst her European colleagues. Oil has a limited, and for short term purposes, static, supply. If you refuse to buy Russian oil, it means you have to buy it from someone else who's already contracted it - likely at a premium. Others, will now have to buy the freed-up Russian oil, so Europe can have its "Freedom Oil". Problem is, those other customers don't have Russian pipelines routes directly to their industry like the holier-than-thou Europeans. Correspondingly, they will have to go to greater lengths to secure the oil, making it likely cost more than their old Emirati or Qatari supplier would have charged, but who is now working with Europeans. And so on, and so forth, the webs get denser and denser.

What's hilarious is that then Europe and America jump on anybody who tries to pick up the slack, like India, for being a callous profiteer at the expense of Ukraine. This, while the West sends $60B+ to Russia, and India does less than a twentieth of that.

The true long term answer to your woes is renewables and nuclear. Strong headwinds on both fronts.

If you refuse to buy Russian oil, it means you have to buy it from someone else who's already contracted it -

To a point that is very true. People do tend to forget Libya which is stabilising as a country, is exporting though not nearly to capacity and whose newly elected Prime Minister has made a very interesting offer. As a country, it's surprisingly westernised, is more anglophone and outward-looking than people might think and despite the vast oil-filled deserts is mainly a Mediterranean coastal population, and a well-educated one.

There are also new fields in west Africa that have long passed the exploration stage and are racing to the production stage.

those British micro-reactors are goin to be kick ass

They could really change everything, though sadly there's a few years before they're up and running. Those together with renewables could sink russia and Kazakhstan's exports to the west.

Merged:

Possibility of Poland/NATO intervening in Western Ukraine

Now, I'm sure everyone will laugh me out of the forum for citing Russian news sources... but here it is:

reuters.com/world/russian-spy-chief-says-us-poland-plotting-division-ukraine-2022-04-28/

"According to the intelligence received by Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, Washington and Warsaw are working on plans to establish Poland's tight military and political control over its historical possessions in Ukraine," Naryshkin said in a rare statement released by the SVR.

I'd like to hear what people think about this. Possible/Impossible? Desirable/Undesirable?

Then, in somewhat related and more recent news, now from Ukraine - we have the head of the National Security and Defense Council, Danilov, accusing Viktor Orban and Hungary of colluding with the Russians in exchange for a promise of historic Hungarian territories in the Carpathians.

One accusation comes from Russian spies, the other from a top Ukrainian official. Different countries accused, but both EU and both NATO.

What's up?

This is an old idea that Pootin the putain floated back in 2014 to general revulsion in Poland (except maybe for the tiny and discredited pro Soviet extreme right).

It's also projection - an aggressive militarized fascist state assumes every other country wants to be just as aggressive and militarized.

Hungary is a different issue. they're still not over Trianon and I can totally imagine Orban svкcing Pootin' Putain off for a chance to grow the country.... I'm really disappointed in Hungary that they keep electing that power-mad jackass.

@Cojestdocholery

I'm with you.

@Bobko

I'm sure that Poland has no interest at all in regaining it's historical possessions in Ukraine.

This is just a weak attempt to get the Ukrainians to mistrust polish motives and it won't work.
