I wonder where you get your news. Even on Ukrainian telegrams you could have seen hundreds of these videos with people getting cellophane wrapped to light posts. Ukrainians are actually proud of these instances, as evidence of civil society taking things into their own hands when it comes to marauders and looters.

I think the reason they get such a kick out of any kind of Russian military failure, is... at the end of the day - fear. It's a natural human reaction to something that causes you anxiety. You don't see them making jokes about Iranian military failures or North Korean ones, because this is distant and ultimately not relevant. Russians, as dirk said, represent many things to many people. To queer people, it may represent a homophobic power that wants to roll things back to a darker time. To colored people, Russia may represent some white-skinned terror that they are not used to seeing from white people for the last half century or so. To feminists, it may represent an atavistic, misogynist power. Russians cause fear on many levels, and that's why they cause hate. A victory for Russians represents something much more ominous than a local victory for North Korea or Iran, therefore all the liberals collectively **** their pants.

It's understandable....it's Ukraine....it's our neighbour in many ways Iran isn't. It's only two hours between Berlin and Kiev and nobody knows if crazy Putin stops at the next foreign border! Not something a European has to think about with North Korea....

Victory over Russia would bring the peace back to Europe, who cares about Iran or NK, that's their problem....Ukraine is ours!

The USA and EU kept adding fuel to the fire shortly after Yanukovych won a 2nd term. The USA sponsored the whole maidan thing. The people in the east didn't like what was going on so they decided to hold a referendum, which foreign observers came in and said was free and fair. That's how Crimea joined Russia, that's how DPR and LPR came about. Ukraine gave up on getting Crimea back because they're too weak so they continued a low level fight till 2022 when Russia stepped in to help.

As far as I remember, Yanukovych run the 2010 election of explicit platform of EU integration. In late 2013 he abruptly broke that social contract and, contrary to the wishes of the populace, sold the country off to Putin's "Eurasian union". The basic premise of the Polish culture is freedom, respect for individual, the more freedom the better. Russian is the opposite, there is only a one free person the whole country and that is a tzar.
