there has never been such a thing as a non-pathologically violent and dysfunctional russian state
It is inherent. A large part of the identity of r*SSia is consistent and regular use of force. As a country, they have literally never done anything major that is also entirely peaceful or altruistic.
The Krynica Forum 22 is interesting today. A good place to have the conference too. There were two interesting quotes, one about the response to the r*SSia's illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and another about the german economic model:
"Strategic autonomy of the EU is a joke. We have a war at the EU borders, and the power which provides most support for us is the US, not the EU".
"German economic model is finished. It was based on cheap Russian energy, export to China and free security. It is finished".
Basically, if you build an economy based on cheap energy from an unstable aggressor state led by a dictator who used chemical weapons against your partners/friends, if you continuously underinvest in your defence budget, if you use that money to prop up the said economy and Ignore warnings from your partners/allies, then you are wrecked when your plan fails with little reason to expect sympathy or assistance from those who did not make such mistakes.
