The day may come when you (...) will wish Russia won that war
Well, that is probably quite accurate. I bet some people in Poland will have such attitude towards this war in the future because Ukrainian victory will change the geopolitical position of Poland. How? Well, for once Poland won't be the largest/strongest country separating Russia from the old EU. Biden's administration have already stated that huge financial resources will be allocated to rebuilding Ukraine - nothing short of a new Marshall Plan - so victorious Ukraine will get every chance to become an economic success (even more so than Poland). Ukraine will most likely be accepted into the EU, which again will shift a lot of resources towards them. Besides, one of the strongest land armies in Europe is in the process of being formed in Ukraine and they have already proved that they can stop Russia if need be, so that again shifts a lot of strategic importance from Poland to Ukraine.
There are many indicators that point to the possibility of victorious Ukraine becoming stronger economically, militarily and politically than Poland, and this can illicit different reactions from Poles:
- those of us who are magnanimous at heart, like yours truly, won't really care and will wish the new, rich and powerful Ukraine all the best in all her endeavours;
- it is quite likely, however, that there will be others who might look at Ukraine with a mixture of resentment and envy, wishing that Russia had won the war.
Human nature, being what it is, makes Novi's prediction rather correct. Oh, well...
