Not really no, just need to know for what and how.
In the past most people cheered it on due to lack of information about how the Soviet Union worked (inprisonment system, excecutions etc) very harsh measures for a harsh climate. Russians in general are drilled and prepared to their most and not complain (similar to Norwegian culture and mentality due to harsh way of life through most of it's history)
So I get it that a lot of Russians are not only doing or has done more then bare "minimum" especially compared to Western Europeans.
Problem is that people in Russia are forced to see limitations everywhere, cause Russians are limited by nature, people, government etc. so harsh and strong limitations are Russian daily life and norm.
While Poland has done everything it possibly can to lift as many possible limitations (mostly brought from outside of Poland), which is a very stark contrast that most Poles do not understand and/or ignore and Russians not only don't get it, but easily become resentful of Poles living a better life even slightly better. (Especially hearing Poles complain on percieved "easy mode")
So one of the few things a Russian can have is something shiny and glamour, otherwise it's a sad existence.
