Ukraine needs to convince foreign backers to support an attack on the peninsula, Andrey Zagorodnyuk says

Nobody here believes it, either. They are just saying nonsense to feel brave and influential. I know this because nobody is planning to go there and wag a finger at Russia.

Thanks, maf, I was wondering what is the situation of women in the RuSSian army...

Here's the whole article (there's much more in there):

rferl.org/a/women-russian-military-field-wife/32342221.html

A quote:

"Russian society considers women at war to be just prostitutes," she said. "And that is really sad."

What disgusting people...

Btw, is this for real??:

"This is how a motivational video for luring Russians into military service looks." -UNIAN 🇺🇦 news service

Notice the focus on ethnic minorities and the sexualization of women? Russia 🇷🇺 is desperate to find more cannon fodder."

Bobko, Velund, are you sure you don't want to join your boys in the trenches in Ukraine (a quote from the article)??:

"They would shoot themselves in the leg because after weeks in the trenches they couldn't even walk anymore," she said. "The damp and freezing conditions just rotted their feet. When their boots were removed, I was in horror; I'd never seen such things before. Gangrene, dried blood -- you couldn't even find their toes. There was nothing for us to do but amputate."

Interesting, are RuSSians so unwilling that Wagner Group has to recruit among Serbs?:

m.jpost.com/international/article-728770

"Russia should halt its efforts to recruit Serbs to fight alongside its Wagner paramilitary group in Ukraine, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said."

Why is everyone not happy about the war? Simple answer Novi, no one wants to see innocent people die for no good reason. Your hero little Vlad is a delusional POS who should be taken out in order to save tens of thousands of more lives. No one really wants to see Russians die needlessly, and this war is not only needless, but is causing global issues. All because one little man wants to think he is the second coming of Peter the Great. Even I really dont want to see Russians being lead to slaughter, unless of course they actually agree that the war needs to happen.

Meanwhile, testing of altered Neptune missiles has begun. Thos missiles can reach well into Crimea. 200 miles further in than where the line of contact is now. That puts everything Russia has built within range, particularly the miltary complexes, barracks, and ammo dumps. Another example of how creative Ukraine can be on the battle field. First it was silent electric dirt bikes, then a whole series of innovations with drones, and now altered missiles. The same missiles that turned the Moscow into an artificial reef in the Black Sea.

Russian forces can jam some of the GPS-guided weapons that the United States has given Ukraine, including Joint Direct Attack Munitions, or JDAMs, according to Business Insider, which cited leaked documents.

The report leaked online found that four of nine extended-range JDAMs used by Ukrainian forces had missed hitting Russian targets, possibly due to jamming

Poland and Hungary have banned imports of grain from Ukraine, as well as its transit through their countries, despite a warning from the EU that the unilateral actions would go against the bloc's trade policies.

The move by the two countries seeks to protect their farmers, which have staged protests in recent months due to a grain glut and crashing prices.

Do you agree or disagree with Poland's move ?

GefreiterKania
17 Apr 2023  #2774

Do you agree with Poland's move ?

Indeed I do. We spent in excess of 2% of our GDP on this war already. Asking us to destroy our farming on top of it is a bit too much.

Bobko

Asking us to destroy our farming on top of it is a bit too much.

Good Polish and Hungarian farmers cannot compete with Ukrainian farmers who must deal with unexploded artillery shells and mines? Muahahaha! I wonder where you would be without EU subsidies and protective tariffs?

Free markets and free trade is a lie that is sold by the EU and US to the rest of us suckers. Even as Ukraine is engaged in a life and death struggle as the "shield of Europe" and "bastion of democracy", it is still more important to protect the re-election chances of PiS and Fidesz.

All you need to know about the Bürgers of Europe and their so-called "values".

Incidentally, how are Polish energy imports from Russia doing? Anybody notice how even though Russia and Ukraine are at war, the pipeline going through Ukraine hasn't seen a single day of stoppages?

GefreiterKania
17 Apr 2023  #2776

with Ukrainian farmers who

...produce sub-quality grain using the amount of pesticides forbidden in the EU.

with Ukrainian farmers who

... sell their grain for dumping prices in Poland.

with Ukrainian farmers who

... promised that they will only use Poland as a transfer country to sell their grain to their usual clients. Unfortunately, they lied and keep selling their low quality grain for dumping prices with help of local cheap cons always ready to make a quick buck.

Ukraine is not in the EU, it does not conform to the EU standards. Desperate hungry people in Africa might very well want this grain and that's where it should go (and that's where it's needed with those low prices).

Bobko
17 Apr 2023  #2777

@GefreiterKania

Indeed. Then what a strange coincidence in timing, between a rising tide of anger at PiS from the agricultural lobby, and the discovery of these pesticides.

Also, perhaps it is only me that remembers these small things, but one of the important reasons Ukrainian wheat was getting sold inside Poland was because all available PKP capacity was devoted to hauling coal around the country after the energy sanctions Poland put in place.

sell their grain for dumping prices in Poland

At the market, there are two sides: those who sell, and those who buy. For both it needs to make sense. What you call dumping, is profitable to Ukrainians that are otherwise liable to see their year's harvest rot in storage.

If you refused refugees this war would already be over. Dead women and kids are so hard to ignore that even China would attack Russia.

Poland and Hungary have banned

...and Bulgaria, Czechia and Slovakia will follow very soon.

anger at PiS from the agricultural lobby

Not from the "agricultural lobby" but from Polish farmers. Agriculture is a strategic branch of economy and it should be well taken care of. Of course, the coming parliamentary elections also play an important role (PiS is pretty much f*cked if they lose the countryside's votes).

As for PKP, there's just too much on their plate at the moment; the arms, ammunition and supplies take an enormous additional amount of transport resources. Something they definitely weren't ready for.

In any case, Ukrainians shouldn't complain - we handed them well over 2% of our GDP on a golden plate, sent sh*tloads of weapons and ammunition, accepted millions of their refugees, while granting them all the social benefits that Polish citizens receive (including health care and child benefits - I don't even want to think how much it cost), exchanged ridiculous amount of their worthless hryvnas for hard currency in the beginning of the war, and in general served as deep strategic hinterground for them. That's quite a lot, don't you think? Destroying our farming on top of all that is a bit too much to ask.

Obviously I am playing the devil's advocate here.

Consider that:

1) Ukraine has lost well over half of its GDP. Your 2% is nothing compared to what they have experienced.

2) Ukraine is a much more agrarian country than practically anybody inside the EU. The importance of these hard currency earnings are proportionally that much more important to their survival.

3) You already told them NATO is a dead end conversation, and that EU membership is at least a decade or two out. The least you could do is open your markets to help them reconstruct, since you are not willing to confiscate Russian money (recently read that you started investing it in bonds on our behalf).

4) If Russia is your lifelong nemesis, then 2% of your annual economic output is a very small sum to pay to ensure you overcome her.

johnny reb

Obviously I am playing the devil's advocate here.

And that is what is needed here to keep our minds open to both sides.

1) This may well be true. I am, however, concerned about Poland's GDP and Poland's general well-being. I am quite sure Ukraine's attitude is exactly the same.

2) Agriculture might be very important for Ukraine but it is also a branch of economy of vital strategic importance to Poland. It will not be sacrificed for Ukraine. Sorry.

3) Again: complete opening of our markets would mean a disaster for our farming. No other EU country would do that, and German or French (especially French) farmers'/governments' reactions would be exactly the same if dumping of Ukrainian produce (originally intended for other world markets) happened in their countries.

4) 2% is only what the Finance Ministry admits to. The official number. My brother-in-law, who works as an analyst for a major bank, claims that if we added all the refugee expenses, child benefits, health care expenses, emergency hryvna exchanges etc. etc. the real number would be closer to 4%. All that during recession, high inflation and the necessity of building the strongest land army in Europe. The necessity which arose, as I'm sure I mentioned before, only because certain bald KGB c*nt decided that he's Peter the Great. :-/

Russia is your lifelong nemesis

Alas. Imagine what we could have: Europe from Lisbon to Vladivostok (which I mentioned in #2725), the greatest empire on earth - with its Western part being the EU and the Eastern part being Russia. New Roman Empire on steroids. Keeping the Chinese firmly by their balls and slowly becoming the greatest power in Earth's history. It was all going so well. But, noooooo... "we are of makings the USSR agains". Kurwa mać... :-/

Bobko

Europe from Lisbon to Vladivostok

It would be great, but if you are honest with yourself you should also not have a hard time imagining what a **** show it would be.

Pros:

1) An immediate and huge injection of military muscle. Whatever kind of jokes you like to make about the Russian military, your guys have to gather in Rammstein ten times a year to make enormous collective donations that still haven't stopped us.

2) Limitless energy supplies, as well as the entire periodic table of elements underground.

3) A transit potential that will overnight cancel out the Suez, Panama Canal, and Malacca straits.

4) An additional European vote at the UN Security Council, leading to a total of 3 of 5.

Cons:

1) The EU wasn't big enough for the UK, Germany, and France to all fit under one roof. The same will happen when Russia joins. It will be a return to the 19th century for Europe. France and Germany will either not appreciate being displaced by Russia as the center of gravity, or will instead make bilateral deals with them that will **** off the Baltics and Eastern Europe.

2) Russia views itself as a separate pole of civilization. Dancing to a Brussels diktat will not go down well with our nationalists. If you think Kaczynski and Orban are destructive for Europe, wait till you get some Russian Dugin as president.

3) We will still be smaller than China in population.

GefreiterKania
17 Apr 2023  #2787

@Bobko

Apparently we have slightly different views on the exact form of the New Roman Empire that could have been created but the details could always have been discussed and changed. I mostly agree with your pros. As for cons:

1) the EU is becoming ever more united; it's not 19th century anymore - with time it will become a more unified entity.
2) Siberia is large enough to fit all those pesky nationalists - the time of primitive nationalisms is over, the time of empires has come.
3) It's also quality that counts and we would be roughly half of China's population, with much stronger economy and military.

It WAS worth a shot. Especially when, with time, the US would be kindly but firmly asked to f*ck off from Eurasia and concentrate on their own continent. Of course all that is just history now. Not going to happen. America will remain the only global superpower forever (maybe China will join them but they lack American expansive spirit - they are an introvert civilisation), and as for Russia... you're a smart guy, I don't have to finish this sentence.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has published an intercepted conversation between a Russian soldier and his wife, indicating that Russians receive orders to kill even children, and they are ready to carry out such orders.

Source: SSU, which publishes the conversation of a Russian citizen who was sent to Ukraine's east in December 2022
Quote from a Russian soldier: "We had to kill minors, women, everyone. Can you believe it? An immediate elimination, in general, [they] just [tell you]: "Shoot them, f***". I'm ready [to do it], but to be honest, I'm f***ing shocked. They explained everything to us: no matter [whether they are] fourteen, eighteen, [or it is] a girl - just kill them on the spot. Let's start the mop-up operation."

Bobko
17 Apr 2023  #2789

@GefreiterKania

I don't need to explain to you that Russia is a special country. In our 1,200 year history there has been many ups and downs. We had an empire early on, and then it was shattered through infighting. Then the Mongols came, and most of the rest of Europe decided to pretend that we simply don't exist - and we may as well have. Yet somehow, Russia re-emerged, but only to again experience a miserable period of volatility. Swedes, Poles, Germans, French tried to erase us. We tried to erase ourselves with the October Revolution, and then the Civil War, followed by collectivization and mass terror.

Nothing works! Russia is indestructible!

It may be some time, but the natural laws of physics will again force something powerful to coalesce around the territory we call Russia. It could take many forms, depending on what method of return to greatness is used:

1) Russia stares into the abyss, and realizes there is no escape from mass immigration. In this scenario we need to grow Russia to 300-400M people within a century or so, through taking everyone the West will not take. Africans, Central Asians, Latin Americans, Southeast Asians, etc. Politically explosive option, but we must remember that Russian greatness comes above such petty things as nationalism.

2) This war shocks Russia into finally resolving issues around corruption and spiritual bankruptcy, so that we can witness a Russian revival like after the defeat in the Crimean War of the 1850s. What I hope for.

3) China and the US murder each other, and Russia is the one left standing with the biggest stick around. Most unlikely.

Bobko
17 Apr 2023  #2790

Then you are mistaken. I don't know about Chinese culture, but European teens have zero issue being obsessed with Korean or Japanese culture.
