is good for the Kremlin when the ruble is weak

I read somewhere else that the Kremlin gains and households lose from a weakening ruble..... that would trend right in line with everything else in russia.....

A comment from RT:

Russia MUST take Odessa too. It's a Russian city! Majority speak Russian. All the way to Moldova. No sea for Ukraine, as it was centuries ago. All should become Russia, including Kharkov. My grandmother was born in Imperial Russia in Kharkov. It was and is a Russian city, ...

I read somewhere else that the Kremlin gains and households lose from a weakening ruble...

This is true for nearly any country (while context matters of course).

Erdogan has been trashing the Lira, to the horror of Turks. Yet there is a perverse logic to it. Maybe Turks can't travel anywhere for vacation any longer, or afford any imported things - like an iPhone. However, it's never been cheaper to manufacture in Turkey, or to buy Turkish products.

The United States government, similarly benefits from a weak dollar. Imports become more expensive, while exports become more attractive. For a country with a huge trade deficit, this is welcome help. The Fed tries to weaken the dollar, when it wants to stimulate the economy. Again, this is at the expense of Americans wanting to go to Paris, or who wanted to buy a Gucci handbag - but it's by no means the end of the world.

Eating Camembert and driving a Mercedes is not a human right. Sometimes the needs of the economy at large, trump the interests of certain groups of the population.

The biden administration ignoring public opposition to more funding for the Ukraine war follows a bipartisan tradition of Washington ignoring the public in favor of special interests.

So why don't the Udmurtian losers come and take Kharkiv and Odessa ?

Should be an easy mornings work for a band of drunk rapists with 60 year old weapo

What does it say about Ukrainian super soldiers, and Western wonder weapons, that they cannot defeat a bunch of alcoholic delinquents with antique arms?

Ukrainian super soldiers, and Western wonder weapons, that they cannot defeat a bunch of alcoholic delinquents with antique arms?

Ukrainians have no problem defeating russians but they don't do meat assaults (or have blocking troops) and the real problem are the mines since russia (in its usual malign way) has turned Ukraine to the most heavily mined country in the world (ever?). despite your assurances the tradition of russians being bunglers means there's no way they're all coming out of the ground anytime soon....

the russian touch is going to poison the land for generations... but as long as russians can delude themselves that they're a 'great power' any human suffering is worthwhile....

it's a hateful, poisonous culture....

Bobko
16 Aug 2023  #401

and the real problem are the mines

I dunno... your Western generals say they know how to deal with mines, and it's the Ukrainians that are idiots for not being able to implement the things they were taught.

Who is lying?

If mines are such a super weapon, why are Ironside and Kania asking for nuclear weapons? Would be much cheaper to lay a 10km thick minefield around Poland, and never worry about another invasion.

Maf, I will seriously have a heart attack, if at some point next year you tell me something like:

"The problem, actually, is that the Orcs had monstrous reserves of tanks, which though old, still need to be dealt with by the Ukrainians."

or...

"The problem is, that there are not enough anti-air missiles in the world to deal with Russia's drone swarm tactics, so it was only a matter of time before Russia gained air superiority."

I am warning you, please don't resort to these arguments in the future, because I will then lose all respect for you.

For close to a year, with a faith becoming of the Apostles, you told us Russians would be buried alive in their trenches by a tank plow, while the dragon's teeth were nothing else but a cope mechanism.

Are you, perhaps, beginning to question your Twitter Gods?

mafketis
16 Aug 2023  #402

why are Ironside and Kania asking for nuclear weapons?

They think that either russia can be trusted (Kania) or Poland can use russia without getting burned (Ironside).

And Ukrainian forces are dealing with mines, it's just a long process.... apparently in current weather the mines get heated up and can be detected by drones at night....

russians and their servants (like novi) have been declaring the counteroffensive a failure since long before it actually began at all....

Meanwhile russian occupied Ukraine is floundering under incompetent and rapacious russian rule.... nowhere wants to join russia, russia just tries to overpower and sugjugate....

How are you going to attract 100 million residents? By promising them no rights?

Why the hell would we lie a 10km minefield around our border ? People live there ! There are fields, factories, beautiful forests, shops and comfortable houses.

This is not Udmurtia where the Tsar is happy to turn his hard won land into a useless minefield that will still be blowing limbs off in 2040.

Udmurtia now panicking over its collapsing currency - considering capital controls and just had a massive hike in interest rates.

All those who think a collapsing currency is positive are in luck - they won't be able to take any out of Udmurtia LOL

The chairperson of the Udmurtian central bank is now a handy fall person - she is being savaged by Putin's allies.

Theoretically independent she made the same mistake as Macron, Heineken etc in thinking she could take care of business as normal and pretend the illegal drunk invasion isn't happening.

In old times troublesome central bankers could be sent to a cushy academic position in the Ivy League. Not gonna happen for her

So now she has two possible futures - a window carelessly left open on an upper floor of the central bank or a wooden bench at The Hague.

When you say Udmurtia do you mean Russia?

He himself doesn't know what he means, and draws conclusions about current processes in the world based on reading newspaper headlines from MSM propaganda from a week ago. ;)

There was no panic on the market, the ruble rolled back, but he keeps jerking off and jerking off to a pleasant (to him) headline from some propaganda cesspool. ;)

Hyperinflation there (even though the inflation they caused is falling in the free world) is now a very real possibility.

The central bank in country A is not able to cause inflation in country B or anywhere else.

He himself doesn't know what he means,

There should be a qualifying test to post on PF.

That doesn't add much to the discourse about r*SSia's illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

Plenty of good news today. Not just the deterioration of and poor prognosis for the r*SSian economy but also some very nice regaining of Ukrainian territory from the orcs.

Great news.

very nice regaining of Ukrainian territory

So your "nice" way is like ukrainian cannon fodder is allowed to enter first line of trenches, then remotely controlled mines turn half of them into fertilizer feedstock, then mortars and artillery complete the job. Russians returns back, usually no more than once or twice, because there is too much damage to the trenches and too many flies attracted by the smell of ukrainian victory...

cannon fodder

The 250,000 plus dead r*SSian conscripts.

So

So perhaps your orcs should have stayed at home instead of carrying out an illegal and unprovoked 'three day special operation' that's lasted a year and a half and can only end with your defeat.

I've a spare wallet I can send you however it won't be big enough to hold all those notes with zeroes on and in any case the r*(SSian post office employees steal anything sent there.

In my opinion it's time for you to spit in the brazen face of all those who write you such crap and stop embarrassing yourself. Just today I shopped for a week's worth of groceries (with delivery - shopping is not very fashionable here right now), five zeros is still a long way off. ;)

So perhaps your orcs should have

5 figures in 'roubles' is only 80 quid/400 zlots so you're behind the western standards we have in Poland or elsewhere the free world. Enjoy your onions.

1945 is a very reliable source

The cold, hard truth in the war between Russia and Ukraine today is that Ukraine's last-gasp offensive has failed, and no amount of spin will change the outcome. The UAF failed for entirely predictable reasons, based on enduring combat fundamentals that are not subject to optimism, wishful thinking, or spin. The question, however, is what should the United States do now.

The policy employed by Washington from the beginning of the war has been supporting Ukraine "for as long as it takes." Whether that was ever a good idea or bad, I'll leave to debate another time. What is important here is that the policy did not produce an outcome beneficial to either Kyiv or Washington and now must evolve to acknowledge new realities.

No one can claim the United States didn't give Ukraine every chance to find out if it could succeed on the battlefield, as we provided literally thousands of armored vehicles, millions of shells, missiles, and bombs, and training and intelligence support - along with scores of billions in other aid. But that help did not produce a Ukrainian victory and it is now time to set new policies in light of current realities. The last part of this series will explore what Washington can do now that can mitigate the failures and produce the best outcome possible for the United States and Ukraine.

Newsweek describes a growing split in the Ukrainian leadership between two sides, one of which wants to 'dig in' and husband resources to prepare for a mass Russian winter offensive, while the other believes in pushing on at all costs-which would come with a huge risk.

Zelensky faces an impossible choice: to go all-in and risk a costly failure, or to cut Ukraine's losses and accept a politically damaging defeat.

The lack of progress has intensified the strategic debate at the highest levels of the Ukrainian government.

newsweek.com/zelensky-pivotal-ukraine-counteroffensive-call-threatens-divide-leadership-1819564

"If General Zaluzhnyi was a NATO general, he would have to refuse the order to take the counter," Dan Rice-a West Point graduate who served as a former special adviser to Zaluzhnyi before taking up the post of president of the American University Kyiv-told Newsweek.

Rice pointed to, in particular, Ukraine's lack of air support, the continued U.S, refusal to supply MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), and the absence of longer-range cluster munitions for use with the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).

"You can't win this without superior artillery and superior airpower to go on the offensive," Rice added. "Nobody should really be shocked by this."
