Russia will soon have to declare war and finish the job. This nonsense will go on forever and my trip to Russia postponed or canceled.

Hey, Vlad, I am 81 so speed things up...

We haven't heard this one for a while Rich LOL

Udmurtia hasn't even started yet

Complete joke - your alcoholic army is so depleted you are begging for more ammo from starving Koreans.

The only job the Udmurtian army will be finishing is the Inter-regimental Moonshine Brewing contest to be held in a burned out truck depot somewhere outside Donetsk airport

Will they exchange wheat stolen in Ukraine for ammunition from Korea?

Since you are funny I forgive you for insinuating that I live in Russia.
There is nothing wrong with buying what you need. Did you know that the US doesn't make ANYTHING that includes a chip or a screen and that if Taiwan stopped selling their ICs, we, the US, (I do live in "America") couldn't make one damn F plane?

LOL and what Udmurtia needs is obsolete shells to put in obsolete guns.

Is that how Udmurtia is finally going to start being serious LOL

Definite breakthroughs by the Ukrainians today and plenty of boozed up Udmurtian farm boys already asking questions of their commanders

Why write about things, you don't have the slightest idea about?

The most modern American towed howitzer is the M777, having been introduced in the early 2000s. Apart from the addition of digital fire control (which could be employed on predecessors as well, in theory), the entire purpose of the M777 was for it to be lighter than its predecessor - the M198 - which was introduced in the late 1960s.

The M198, in turn, was an intended as a more lightweight replacement for the M114 howitzer. Unlike the M114, the M198 could be dropped by parachute, or hauled by a Chinook or Super Stallion helicopter.

The M114, introduced in 1942, was itself a further development of the Canon de 155 C (modèle 1917 Schneider). It differed from its predecessor, by being able to elevate the gun higher, and having a less cumbersome carriage.

In other words, American guns, just like Russian guns, haven't changed very much since the First World War. The most widely used shell in the M777/M198/M114 is the M107 shell. Designed in the 1930s, as an improvement to a World War I-era French shell.

Who is using old guns, or outdated shells, in other words - is a big question. Not that it matters either. Would you prefer to get killed with a democratic and righteous 155mm shell, or a freedom-hating and primitive 152mm shell?

Why does America need howitzers? Against drug smugglers?

Alien

Against drug smugglers?

Not necessarily, howitzers can, for example, launch small tactical nuclear bombs.

Mexico and Canada already signed the surrender papers. No need even for AR-15s.

Or is it the other way...The US surrendered and opened its borders to all who can say "asylum". Still no need for howitzers...

Bobko
15 Sep 2023  #2021

Why does America need howitzers?

I'd be happy if the United States had zero howitzers, however I can't go so far as to say it does not need them.

Guns are great, but big guns are even better. I think it was Mao that said, "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun."

Had America had no big guns, how could we then tell it apart from effeminate Europe?

Novichok
15 Sep 2023  #2022

Had America had no big guns,

As I said...Mexico and Canada swore to never attack the US so what the hell do we need them howitzers for? In case Russia or China invades NY or Cali? We would welcome them here and pray they stay...

With your detailed knowledge of artillery it's surprising you are not at the front - you probably know more than the big eared Siberian farm boys who are trying to operate those rusty pieces of Cold War crap.

Your country is in a war and you are still here trolling ?

Do you include RuSSia in there? lol

Yeah, that's what I was saying some time ago... He seems to have a lot of knowledge about military...

Bobko, how come you know so much about military stuff? You must've been pretty young when you moved to the US considering you attended university there, so I'm guessing you didn't do the compulsory military service in RuSSia?

I know a lot compared to you, yes.

so I'm guessing you didn't do the compulsory military service in RuSSia?

Correct, but this is not a violation of Russian law.

This isn't an answer to my question :))))

Correct, but this is not a violation of Russian law.

I didn't claim that it is... I'm just saying that if you did that compulsory military service it would explain your knowledge about the military... But since you didn't, then where all this knowledge about military stuff is coming from in your case?

mafketis
15 Sep 2023  #2028

if you did that compulsory military service

In today's edition of russia being very.... russian....

mobilized russians will not go home before the end of the war (presumably this applies only to living soldiers but russia has done a lot of abandoning their own in this war, so....)

This is in direct contradiction to assurances given less than a week ago... what'cha gonna do? .... russia....

So in the last days, Russia lost a submarine, a ship and a (supposedly) high tech air defence system. Do we have a somewhat reliable estimate at the cost of those systems? I've heard the damage is more than 2bn.

I'm a curious person, and there's virtually no field of knowledge which does not interest me.

That's what happens in half-ass wars. I am beginning to appreciate the US-style shock-and-awe.
Dead civilians? BFD. We lose more at home every year for political reasons than we lost soldiers in all wars since WW2.

In fact, civilians should be the top priority target, This demoralizes the army very quickly.

A plausible excuse would be nice to have...No good excuse? Oops...sorry...let's call it "collateral damage"...

Really? Well then tell me about the type of ancient Greek sculpture/sculpting technique with a difficult name starting with "ch"... :)))

Don't get me wrong, I'm a zodiacal Gemini, so I'm interested in all kids of stuff too, but since I'm interested in many things my knowledge tends to be rather superficial... while yours seems to be more... detailed :)

There are more problems to this approach...

Shock and awe becomes impossible, even for the US, if you spent two years blasting millions of shells, and expending thousands of missiles.

Now, for shock and awe - we would need at least a few years to build back up. At this point, no amount of North Korean and Iranian kit would allow us to stun the Ukrainians into a rapid collapse. No... only those stockpiles we had, would have allowed an overwhelming demonstration of force - if employed over a short period of time. Using them, slowly, was the worst approach of all.

What is left at this point, is the bloodiest meatgrinder, which will exhaust all parties.

The only thing which makes me feel better, is that even after "Shock and Awe", the United States managed to get mired in a conflict for a further two decades, wasting even more treasure than we have wasted up until this point.

tell me about the type of ancient Greek sculpture/sculpting technique with a difficult name starting with "ch"

Are you referring to the chryselephantine technique, which involves use of ivory and gold?

if you spent two years blasting millions of shells, and expending thousands of missiles.

Since I am a heartless subhuman, my S&A woulld have the most sensitive targets civilians love - churches, mosques, and temples - at the top of the list. Then museums and government buildings - the oldest first. Then bridges, water, and energy plants...all in stages to allow the enemy to surrender.

The way the US delivered the two nukes to the Japs was brilliant - one than the second with god only knowing how many were in the queue...

As I said, slow and nice is actually the most cruel. See 500,000 dead men in 18 months - more than the US casualties in WW2.

So your'e saying exactly what Ukraine should do... target russian civilians in the most demoralizing way possible (easier since they're weaker willed and more obedient by nature than Ukrainians).

Didn't figure you for pro-Ukrainian but welcome to the party!

This strategy really worked for the Wehrmacht in Eastern Europe... . Turns out people end up fighting more desperate when their only alternative is death anyway.

Whenever we get major news about Ukrainian deep strikes on Russia or Russian occupied territory, it is generally regarding the hitting of significant military targets; airbases, oil refineries, air defenses, naval bases, ammo depots, critical infrastructure. But whenever we get major news of Russian deep strikes on Ukrainian territory it is more often apartments and cafes and stuff like that.
