Don't get me wrong - it's really easy. When I go to the DMV to get my license renewed (have to do it every couple years, because the expiration matches my visa), along with the questions about organ donation there's always a little box to check if want to register to vote. Now I know it's not legal for me to vote, so I just leave it blank.

Then, despite everybody knowing I'm on a visa - I keep getting jury summons. These I also ignore, but always wonder if I'm gonna run into some trouble down the line.

But the point is - it would never occur to me to go to vote illegally - even if I was filled with some evil desire to subvert the American electoral process. What if I get caught? What if some of my documents don't check out? The risk-reward to going to vote instead of sitting at home and watching football is insane.

True story. I have had clients, Canadians working in the USA get their license in their State of residence and vote. In most states, if the state combines licens, or ID issuance with voter registration, an illegal can vote and not be charged with a crime. Because the state initiates the process, the illegal may or may not even be aware its not legal for him or her to vote. This is why Democrats want to issue license and ID to everyone. This gives them some legal status in the state they reside in. Making it harder to deport them and keep them from voting.
