There is economical gains to be expected, though. Border in forests with a $hithead neighbour is way much more expensive to guard, compared to a dirty beaches with swarms of sprats in water. ;)

Its not about Russia, its about the reality of continued support that Ukraine needs from NATO countries. And taking that 10% of Russian oil off global markets would have major consequence for all countries. So lets say you could destroy all Russian oil production, yes you would effectively collapse the Russian economy but you would dramatically increase the oil price.

So now suddenly NATO countries are paying $140-$160 for oil, how much appetite would they have to continue to help Ukraine considering the problems in there own economies? No NATO country would be able to supply military aid to Ukraine at the expense of its own domestic economy and even if the governments wanted to that anger from citizens would eventually lead to political change in elections.

Its not something we should encourage and Ukraine is aware of this.

The meta-message from Ukraine is "If you don't give us what you promised and seek to place artificial restraints on what we can do we will take matters into our own hands."

From the first week Ukraine has been asking for air cover and it has been consistenly denied and has received something like only two thirds of promised help and many 'allies' want to place absurd restrictions on actions.....

If the allies don't want to step up and fulfill their promises then they don't get to criticize Ukraine hitting russia where it hurts.
