and they serve not those purposes which you think they serve.

My goodness, we've come over very Biblical - and verily I say unto thee, time to go and have a cup of tea before thou dost completely lose the run of thyself :)

Being rich has nothing to do with being free, and vice versa.

If I were rich in "communist" Poland, I would stay.

True. Freedom is relative thing. Money makes you free and man stop to BS and just enjoy.

This is how Rome subjugated some of our ancestors. Sure, add to it threat on life and one just start to feel himself free. And see the truth.

But, luckily for us all, dick of destine exist.

@mafketis
You really are fvcking stupid. All your name calling and other nonsense is boring. You bring nothing to the table to stimulate real conversation. Happy gulag biatch!

Everyone wanting to continue this war is officially retarded. Everyone wanting to end the war with a reasonable negotiated peace will be on the right side of history.

When I read something like this I know that the rest will be just as good. I am never disappointed. Thanks...

Happy gulag biatch!

That told him.

True. Its all so funny.

So instead of capitalism maybe we should rephrase. Wealth for the general population correlates strongly with democracy and the rule of law - there are a handful of exceptions like Saudi and Singapore but in general, in a dictatorship you can only become rich by making some kind of bargain with the boss man.

As for "the right side of history" - when has that ever involved kowtowing to murderers, rapists and thieves.

Bobko

in a dictatorship you can only become rich by making some kind of bargain with the boss man.

... or so long as you fly under the radar (not make waves politically, and stay mum), or contribute to so called "pet projects".

The above does not mean that capitalism is not happening.

Regarding the merits of democracy versus other forms of government you should read Aristotle and Plato.

I have read both. Of course democracy is an imperfect system that is always developing, but people miss it when it's taken away.

I'd say it's more than a system; it's something that occurs in many forms in different places. And yes, people who have experienced it would miss it; that is one reason to fight for it.

I think it was Karen Davis that pointed out that democracy isn't a nice thing governments decided to do for populations but a necessary outgrowth of an increasingly complex world. You need educated people to make a modern society work and educated people will want a say in things....

You can pretend for a while and create a simulacrum of success but then it goes south... China's economic is teetering on the edge of an abyss and the population is increasingly angry. russia keeps on being russia with most people living in degraded conditions (and all kinds of social malaise are off the charts).

Want modernity and prosperity? You need some form of democracy...

If nothing else, democratic leaders have to be more careful with how costly their wars turn out and/or make a better job in justifying them. Moral issues aside, this makes it less likely to overcommit. The USA lost approx. 50k dead soldiers in Vietnam before they pulled out. The Russians have already lost 4 times that in Ukraine (while having a smaller population and much worse demographic) with no sign of stopping.

Hence one country will end this decade as a superpower, while the other can look forward to a future as China's second North Korea (if they are lucky).

Yeah, America will be the superpower and Russia will be a Chinese subordinate.

Putin is crazy!

Biden's decision to allow Ukraine to use American missiles against Russia, came at just the right time.It will make it very difficult for Trump to pull back from that.
But for all his talk.I suspect Trump will continue to support Ukraine.
It will not be a war winner for Ukraine but has, at least, evened the battlefield.
Given Ukraine's far superior knowledge and technology against Russia's pathetic disorganisation it may help.
Russia will continue to throw their young men and now North Koreans into the Russian meat grinder. But how long can that last?
Given Ukraine's ability to blow them up, I suspect that by summer, Russia will be trying to get out of this war.
Both sides are stubborn. Can a deal be made?
I doubt it.

The systems that function well are not democracies. They are known as families, corporations, and armies.

Democracies eat themselves and die.

Novichok

Please disregard #619.

Families, corporations, and armies function well because they are NOT democracies.

Democracies eat themselves and die because the built-in corruption - vote for me and I will reward you - is endemic and at the very foundation of democracy.

This is why the US is stuck with an unpayable debt that one day soon will become a financial avalanche.

I am glad that Trump will be president soon. The annual deficit of 3 trillion and the debt of 35 trillion will not be erased easily.

The MICC and a dozen of other parasite lobbies will make sure of it...

Growing tensions: Washington opened a new missile base close to the Russian border
The Redzikowo Missile Defense is located near the small Polish town of Redzikowo, the new air defense base is just under 100 miles (160 kilometers) from Poland's border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
Now to start building Fort Trump and supplying it with nuke's so Poland can be Putin's number one target.
All at the Americans taxpayer's expense.

US President Joe Biden's reported approval for Kiev to conduct long-range strikes on Russian territory with US-supplied missiles is pushing the world closer to World War III, American political commentator Steve Gill has told RT.

I need an explanation why I and other Americans should give a fvck if Ukraine is in Nato and why we should risk WW3 over this bullshit.

Want modernity and prosperity?

You need a free market economy, low taxes and a government that is small and lean. You dont need an over inflated, expensive democracy that is controlled by the wealthy and elites. If the founding fathers of "democracy" could see what it has been twisted into around the world, they would roll over in their graves.

At the G20 meetings, support for Ukraine is weakening everywhere. Trumps win is forcing people around the world to pull their heads out of their a$$ and take a deep breath of reality. Even the leftards are realizing their ambition to keep the war going is misplaced and they should actually focus on matters that both of the political discussion can get on board with.

Meanwhile, the UK still hasnt said it will allow Ukraine to fire Storm Shadow missiles into Russia. I wonder why they are delaying after they got the US to make the stupid decision?

I guess an inflated government is the reason that Norway is mired in perpetual poverty....

Capitalism is like fire, a dangerous servant and a terrible master. It's creative force needs to be channeled and directed. Relative size of government is less important than questions of 'rule of law' (which both parties in the US have been trying to escape) and measures to keep corruption in check (it can never be eliminated entirely, but it can be limited).

Rule of law strongly corresponds to predictability. Dictatorships reach an economic ceiling because they're too unpredictable, sink all your money in the promising economy and then the dictator declares that daffodils are now the only legal currency and without the rule of law you kaput. russia and china both reached the dictatorship ceiling but instead of reforms they've doubled down on idiotic dictator stuff.

why they are delaying after they got the US to make the stupid decision?

You mean the stupid decision to limit use of ATACMs to Kursk? Or are you behind the news cycle.

While we're here, if Scholz's call to putin was such a great idea then why did putin escalate immediately afterward?

Is democracy a Greek name for populism?
Does the government system not depend on how a society is organized?
Such an organization differs not because of some superficial issue of electing its officials but because it is different at the core.
Is such a core not named civilization/culture?

China has accused the United States of "pouring fuel on fire and escalating the war" following biden authorizing Ukraine to strike Russian territory with U.S. missiles
Russia importing ten thousand plus military soldiers from N. Korea (with more soon to come) doesn't count as "Pouring fuel on the fire and escalating the war". 😴

I don't know Iron - surely democracy becomes part of the core along with say religion and ancient traditions ?

Half of Poles were born in a democratic system and I think all feel it is part of the DNA of Polish life. i would certainly say democracy is as important as catholicism and being a Slav, in what makes modern Poland.

mafketis
19 Nov 2024  #626

Is democracy a Greek name for populism?

No one wants to really define democracy and it's a very fuzzy concept. What the various (more accepted) definitions have in common is the idea that citizens have a direct (collective) say in government policy, either through direct choice (like Swiss referenda) or through choosing policy makers (representative democracy).

There are also questions of honest in allowing votes, collecting them and counting them.

Mexico for decades was a simulacrum with one party winning every 'election' and not even trying to hide the various tactics they used.

The world is generally turning away from democracy (similar to the turn away from democracy before WWII).

cms neuf
19 Nov 2024  #627

Unfortunately it's more serious than the 30s because then you had 3 world powers that were committed to democracy - the US, France and UK. Now even in those countries people feel less sure that it's a good idea that they elect their leaders and there are checks and balances.

There are some surprisingly strong newer democracies though - Italy, Spain, South Africa, Poland

Relative size of government is less important than questions of 'rule of law'

Clearly you do not understand how fvcked up big government is. Polands big government is costing the Polish people a lot more than it should. Democracy does not exist without a free market economy. The problem is government size, over reach and over regulation in most cases. Democracies such as the ones run by American Democrats are more expensive for everyone and only create big government where the elites are in charge.

What the world is turning away from is not democracy, but the elites who are trying to redefine what it is. Those that are focing immigration, unbridled taxation, and woke ideologies on people that clearly reject all of it.

As for the use of ATACM's, Kursk is only one place Ukraine wants to use them. Biden has escalated things, and placed all of us in Europe at risk because of his singular stupidity and the stupidity of those who advise him. Scholz call to Vlad was no trigger for escalation, it was smart to actually talk to the enemy and let them know, we all need to be prepared to talk. I would bet Vlad doesnt want to see another half million of his boys die either.

And now Vlad updated its nuclear policy to include the use of nukes on anyone who uses western supplied weapons in Russia. And we inch closer to WW3. But all the PF cheerleading is so awesome.
