Russianness is more encompassing than Polishness.
It is debatable; It is not necessarily the truth.

To be Polish
I don't think you fully understand how those "Western nationalities" operate, both in terms of law and in everyday life. Additionally, becoming Polish is not particularly difficult; if you are genuine, it is much easier than becoming French or even British. I'm not familiar with Germany, but I suspect their requirements may be even stricter than those of the French.
I would say that being American is about as easy as being Polish, maybe even slightly easier.

It is nihilism. The effects of World War II had a significant impact, and Poland suffered greatly. This sense of depression and nihilism mirrors what Poland experienced after the wars with Sweden and the Khmelnytsky Rebellion.
Due to geopolitical reasons, as well as historical and cultural factors, Poland is compelled to assert itself as a power. We don't really have a choice. We can either strive to become a great local or even global power, or risk becoming a vassal state under Germany or Russia. There is no middle ground.
