Sadly, Milo, I applaud your optimism but I don't think anyone is winning this war, it just seems to be a drawn-out quagmire with no end in sight until one side can no longer support continuing - and we have to hope that side is Moscow.

Personally, I hope this 'Vietnam' of Russia's will eventually have such a bad effect on Putin's ratings that the people will turn on him. An incredible number of Russian dead, and even they must surely come to a point where they'll stand up and say "no more". It would be beautiful if one of his own eventually put one between his eyes, if not a more formal political change.

It's a very good article from The Times. Putler is not doing very well at all at the moment and support for his aggression from the people in r*SSIa that matter, the oligarchs and spooks, is haemorrhaging.

Everyone seems to think there is some natural "ceiling" to the war in Ukraine, that Russia's leadership - for whatever reason - will never cross.

Thankfully - Obama, Biden, Trump, et al are serious enough people to see the mistake in this type of thinking.

Had it been the will of the Twitter and Facebook crowd - Ukraine would have gotten all the help it needed - and we would be living in some Terminator world now.

Thank God responsible people make prudent decisions, even if not everyone is left happy.

This folly is rooted in the belief Putin wants to remake the Soviet empire, as opposed to seeing western in-roads in Ukraine as an existential threat. The ignoring Russia's point-of-view is dangerous, IMO.

From what I've read and heard from those who portend to be serious Moscow-watchers, Putin is not the hardest hard-liner inside the Kremlin. So, wanting Putin erased, is one of those things that being careful for what one wishes for is apropos.

I wonder if Trump realizes that bombing Russia is not going to force Putin to the table? Not sure he does.

He is the one which name is forever tied to the war in Ukraine.....when he can't deliver all his promises after so many costs he will go down in flames, and his supporters with him!

What should the next one in the Kremlin do? Blow the same trumpet? Nobody will want to be seen as a loser, or follow a loser, or standing beside a loser, and especially not doing the same as the loser before him...I very much doubt that! :)

It's not the same Russia as in 2022, or 2023, or even 2025.

The country has been militarized to an insane degree.

Putin is a disaster at communications.

He thinks he will give history lectures on ABC News, or drop inert IRBMs on Kiev and it we'll send the correct message.

That's inly one possible outcome. One that is very unlikely, IMO.

Russia's point-of-view is different than the West's.

This war obviously hasn't gone the way Russia hoped, but it is not defeated...and it will not simply thrown its hands up and call it a day. This war means a different thing for them than it does for the west.


And, that is what I fear and do not want to see. But, if guys like Karganov (or whatever) get their way...could be.

You have to ask why they withdrew from those wats.

WWI- Russia had major domestic upheaval and change.

Afghanistan- social change again, verge of economic collapse.

Russia doesn't face any of that at the moment.

Russian leadership under Putin has a different mindset. They view the west with outright distrust and scorn.

Russia has been relatively restrained. They seem to be more willing now than ever to loosen that restrain.

I don't think most in the weat appreciate the level of distrust and validated paranoia Russia has toward the west.

You also seem to show no regard for the many problems Ukraine faces.

it's the Cathedral of the Dormition in the Pecherskiy Lavra, a UNESCO world heritage site, the equivalent of bombing St John's Cathdral in Warsaw or Wawel Cathedral in Krakow.

A war crime too, as was bombing the art gallery in Kharkiv this week.
