The people you are talking about need to learn the word "Humble" and lower their standards and live within their means which means no pet dog, no cell phones, no cable t.v., no internet service, no second car, no alcohol, no cigarettes, no marijuana, no lotto tickets, no eating out at restaurants or fast food joints, no beauty parlors to get hair or fingernails done, no away from home vacations, no professional sporting events. no boat, no golfing, no skiing, no........

I went without all those things and it didn't seem to hurt me.

Look, our trade deficit has nothing to do with tariffs. We simply buy more from others than they buy from us. American consumers are addicted to cheap stuff or dependent on low prices for the reasons described. So make the corporations pay living wages for their employees, get rid of the "shop 'til you drop" mentality and manufacture products in the United States that other countries actually want. Weapons, gas-guzzling SUVs, GMO food and meat polluted with hormones and antibiotics don't cut it obviously, nor does the export of raw materials like oil and gas. The US needs to start leading in technology again, but try that with our run down school system and completely overpriced private and public colleges. There's a reason why we have so many high tech employees from abroad in the country.

The trade deficit isn't really that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. Many 1st world countries run trade deficits and still have positive gdp growth due to other gdp components like domestic consumption. Now if we could cut government spending especially on all the bogus welfare leeches and disability claimants and puy it into infrastructure while impose a hefty tax on imports we'd be golden.

Dirk, I love you, man, but you are wrong. Trade deficit is a very big deal because it puts our money in the hands of foreign powers, China being the very worst and the most hostile. It is that trade deficit that they use to build their military and the islands. By spending the trade deficit money on US treasuries, China is aiding and abetting our recklessness in domestic spending like the welfare you don't like. BTW, neither do I.

With a trillion-dollar pile of US government debt, China now has the leverage over the US and they often threaten to use it. This is a matter of national security. Internal spending is not as long as it is in line with the income to make printing money not necessary.

Imports/exports make up a relatively small fraction of us gdp. Over 70% is domestic consumption - services, buying houses, groceries, etc. But yes of course having a trade surplus would be beneficial but it's not the end all be all.

And why should the government interfere? I thought libertarians hate nothing more than the government? It all boils down to changing the behavior of the American consumer (that includes living on credit) and to create attractive products.

The government should interfere whenever the country as a whole is at risk. Unchecked and unsustainable deficit spending and trade deficit falls into this category.

If your kids or your wife drove you close to bankruptcy because they are "addicted" to shopping - which simply means they are financially irresponsible idiots - would you start looking for a shrink, a 12-step program, or just cut off the money sources like credit cards? Nothing personal here.

Changing idiots into geniuses is not in the government tool box. What is in that tool box is (1) laws that can prohibit, but not compel, and (2) taxes. Tariff is nothing else but a tax on irresponsible and economically damaging behavior - buying foreign goods. That's on the consumer side.

It's also a tax to remind the domestic companies that there is a negative consequence to the American society when they exercise the constitutionally permitted act of closing a factory and moving it to China. They are indeed free to do it. The US government can't stop them but it is constitutionally permitted to express its displeasure by slapping a tax on the goods made outside and shipped to the US.

This fix is immediate and can easily be made moot by bringing that factory back home. So simple that even I understand it.

What would happen? The labor costs would explode (compared to the costs in a third world country), resulting in a huge price increase across the whole spectrum of products that no ordinary American will be able to afford. On top of that, there's no way that the country could ever fill those jobs that returned home. You have to either increase immigration, or you count on automation which in turn would directly hurt the American worker.


That's what I meant. Our whole economy is based on credit. There more you consume, the better. Paying back your debt? Not so important. That's a job for our children and grandchildren. The attitude of the people needs to change, or we will all go down the drain sooner or later.


Yes, but who's paying that tax (tariff, import duties, whatever you want to call it)? We pay it, not the corporations or the foreign countries where the factories are located. If you slap 25% on Chinese plastic crap for example, it's still much cheaper than anything made in the USA. So what will people continue to buy? The Chinese products of course, but now at a higher price. And the government pockets not only the amount added by the tariff, but also the higher sales tax on the now more expensive product. The regular guy can never win in this game.

Instead, you engage in speculations to show that the US is somehow inherently incapable of having a trade surplus.
