What do you think will happen if prices all of a sudden increase tenfold or more?

People will have to start living within their means.
Kids don't need braces just because they have a crooked tooth, kids don't need $800 cell phones, the latest designer cloths, vacations to Disney World and Dad and Mom don't need to drive two Escalades, go to Professional Sport Games, take their kids out to dinner five nights a week, go to the Casino, live in a $600,000 houses......

Starting to get the drift that people live beyond their means and go in debt with no hope of ever getting out in their life time..... so they get two jobs, one to keep up on the interest rates of their debt and one to blow on things they can't afford going further in debt.

It would do my heart the ultimate if there was a law that said the ONLY three things you could borrow money for were a business, home and car.

Credit cards would be outlawed.
The fat people would be slimming down real fast.

It's only the American tariffs that are evil and harmful to the Americans, goes the story. The EU tariffs, on the other hand, are good for the EU

Don't look at one particular tariff, look at the average across the whole spectrum. It evens out between the US, the EU and Japan for example. Trump does not understand that and created a problem where there is none.

people live beyond their means and go in debt with no hope of ever getting out in their life time..... so they get two jobs

Living beyond your means is one thing, but companies only paying minimum wage or slightly above is the real problem here. That people can't earn enough to afford even the most basic things and have to work two or three jobs just to survive is a disgrace for the richest country on Earth. And it's only because our society is built on greed - and greed only.

Trump does not understand that and created a problem where there is none.

False. The problem is the US trade deficit. It's bad for the US and it's unsustainable. Period. End of the story. The rest is just how to make it go away.

Have any ideas how to do it?
johnny reb

Sure Rich, the same way we did it in the 50's.

That people can't earn enough to afford even the most basic things

And those are the people that qualify for low cost housing, for free food, for free healthcare, supplemental social security and free free free government welfare.

Plus they pay no taxes yet get an unearned income tax credit for doing nothing.
They live much better then I did growing up because there were no government welfare programs.
The people you are talking about need to learn the word "Humble" and lower their standards and live within their means which means no pet dog, no cell phones, no cable t.v., no internet service, no second car, no alcohol, no cigarettes, no marijuana, no lotto tickets, no eating out at restaurants or fast food joints, no beauty parlors to get hair or fingernails done, no away from home vacations, no professional sporting events. no boat, no golfing, no skiing, no........

I went without all those things and it didn't seem to hurt me.
Oatmeal for breakfast with a banana, home made chicken soup for lunch and potato pancakes for supper.
Day after day after day.
Salvation Army was my Mall.
That was the first half of my humble life and living such a humble life I can now buy any damn thing I want with cash.

our society is built on greed - and greed only.

We can't change that but we can LOWER OUR STANDARDS to compensate for it living within our means.
I think it is called "Pecking Order".
There are no poor people in America.
johnny reb

The less fortunate are just as greedy as the fortunate today and that's the problem.
So you are right, we live in a greedy society.

Fake News, all propaganda.

Spoken like a true socialist! Almost verbatim talking points from Alexandria Ocasio Cortez......Craaaaawwwwwwwww!

"Unemployment is low because everyone has two jobs," she said. "Unemployment is low because people are working 60, 70, 80 hours a week and can barely feed their family." Alexandria Ocasia Cortez.

These comments were odd and, pretty much any way you interpreted them, incorrect. Did she mean to say that the unemployment rate falls faster when people take second jobs?

This is the new face of the Democratic party. Good luck! lol

dailycaller.com/2018/07/16/ocasio-cortez-unemployment-two-jobs

And those are the people that qualify for low cost housing, for free food,

These benefits should only apply to American citizens and not Illegal scum that snuck over our borders.

False. The problem is the US trade deficit.

Have any ideas how to do it?

Stop trading? Prohibit the sale of foreign products in the USA? Force corporations to cut their profits in half and return home? Exterminate the poor part of our population?

Look, our trade deficit has nothing to do with tariffs. We simply buy more from others than they buy from us. American consumers are addicted to cheap stuff or dependent on low prices for the reasons described. So make the corporations pay living wages for their employees, get rid of the "shop 'til you drop" mentality and manufacture products in the United States that other countries actually want. Weapons, gas-guzzling SUVs, GMO food and meat polluted with hormones and antibiotics don't cut it obviously, nor does the export of raw materials like oil and gas. The US needs to start leading in technology again, but try that with our run down school system and completely overpriced private and public colleges. There's a reason why we have so many high tech employees from abroad in the country.

Craaaaawwwwwwwww!

Cold turkey again? If you want me to take you serious, come up with something else than your MAGA and Fake News bullsh*it. You sound like a broken record.

The US needs to start leading in technology again

Yeah while as long as China, Iran and Russia are cyber hacking/stealing our technology it makes it tuff to do.

There's a reason why we have so many high tech employees from abroad in the country.

And that is they are stealing our technology and sending it back home.
Trump has brought this up several times now to China.
What is your solution to this ?
Did you see Iran's latest jet fighters that they just introduced.......they look EXACTLY like our F-35's.
Coincident ? no, they stole the blueprints from us.

Stop trading? Prohibit the sale of foreign products in the USA?

I thought that you would give a serious answer to a very serious question. I will for a moment ignore your flippant post and rephrase my question. Please do not tell me about the consumers' addictions since the US government is not required or permitted to deal with their neurotic and reckless behavior in making foreign trade decisions.

So, again: What specifically can the US government do to eliminate the trade deficit that is allowed under the Constitution?

The leftists still claim that what happened after Trump was elected is all Obongo's doing. I mean the economy and the stock market.
I am really curious how they will try to add the new NAFTA deal to the Obongo's so the already so totally awesome resume.

Weapons, gas-guzzling SUVs,

Can't think of more awesome american products. Seems the wealthy gulf states loves these as much as we do. Even the higher ups in Isis preferred ar15s to ak47s.

The trade deficit isn't really that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. Many 1st world countries run trade deficits and still have positive gdp growth due to other gdp components like domestic consumption. Now if we could cut government spending especially on all the bogus welfare leeches and disability claimants and puy it into infrastructure while impose a hefty tax on imports we'd be golden.

Keep Blabbing all your gloom and doom

This is just it Joker like the tariff issue with the Dems.
They jump on it the next day after they are put in place with their doom and gloom.
My god man, give the tariff's a chance to work or fail before you start in on (for no other reason) I hate Trump doom and gloom.

It's getting old.

The leftists still claim that what happened after Trump was elected is all Obongo's doing.

Yup and Trump is wearing out pen after pen un signing everything Obongo signed yet the economy keeps booming and the market keeps going up so I guess that shoots the theory that it had anything to do with Osama's doing.

Trump has made things happen in his first year in office that obama couldn't do in his eight years in office.
This is why the Commie Left hates Trump is because Trump is making them look bad, very bad, inferior do nothings but spend other peoples money.

Have any ideas how to do it?

Of course not Rich, he is a typical Dem criticizing everything Trump does but they don't have a better way to get it done.

At least Trump is doing something even if it is wrong, they do nothing.
All they do is criticize with negative, blame it on Trump and never get anything done to Make America Great Again.
Mark my word here and now........."If they lose the mid terms in November......their meltdown will be the mother of all meltdown and they will come out on the streets after the Christians with blood and fiery."

The trade deficit isn't really that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

Dirk, I love you, man, but you are wrong. Trade deficit is a very big deal because it puts our money in the hands of foreign powers, China being the very worst and the most hostile. It is that trade deficit that they use to build their military and the islands. By spending the trade deficit money on US treasuries, China is aiding and abetting our recklessness in domestic spending like the welfare you don't like. BTW, neither do I.

With a trillion-dollar pile of US government debt, China now has the leverage over the US and they often threaten to use it. This is a matter of national security. Internal spending is not as long as it is in line with the income to make printing money not necessary.

This one tells the whole story and why Trump is spot on being pissed off and why he talks tariffs. Permanent or as a negotiating ploy is a different matter, but he is correct trying to correct what the asleep-at-the-wheel White House idiots before him ignored or made worse. I am including the compassionate frat boy, too.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_current_account_balance

The US should be at the top of the good list. Instead, stupidly, it leads the parade of the worst. Also, in the first 6 positions are the countries we, stupidly, protect militarily. Coincidence, or is it that they can invest the money they don't have to spend on guns because they have a sucker - that would be the US - to take care of their rear ends.

I am still waiting for how to eliminate our trade deficit and be like, say, Germany.
Dirk diggler
29 Aug 2018  #856

Imports/exports make up a relatively small fraction of us gdp. Over 70% is domestic consumption - services, buying houses, groceries, etc. But yes of course having a trade surplus would be beneficial but it's not the end all be all.

We need to have an old school mob guy running us NATO affairs. Back in the day if an owner didn't want to pay adequate protection money they got beat up, their store torched etc. Why can't trump just do the same to the freeloaders like germany? Maybe we could test out a few cruise missles and destroy some of the nord stream 2 pipes. 2 birds one stone.

But in all honesty I find it funny how now Mexico did a deal with Trump. Canada wanted to but Trump snubbed that pencil neck cuck **** trudaeu. God that guys such a punk ***** lol. Now all the people who realized they're worse off with tariffs against them then the us they're lining up to do deals. Most people in UK according to a recent poll want a post brexit deal with us too.

McCain was an elites that loved being in the spot light.
When Trump pooped his balloon about not being a war hero, that McCain wore out like a broken crutch to promote his career, (about like the "Zionist Jews" have worn out ant Semitism), McCain had a meltdown for being exposed as riding the shirttails of the real war hero's to promote his own personal political platform.

He was nothing more then a pain in the ass for the Republican party.
He should have retired after his loss for the presidential bid and went out on a high note.
May God bless his soul as much as I personally did not care for the guy.

That was a serious answer. Stop consuming as if there's no tomorrow and manufacture products that people abroad buy. We wouldn't have a trade deficit if American companies wouldn't outsource in low wage countries and American consumers wouldn't be addicted to cheap products.

When Trump pooped his balloon about not being a war hero

Even if you despised McCain as a politician: A five times draft dodger is the last one who will ever have the right to voice an opinion about veterans.

@Rich

Ran out of time, sorry.

And why should the government interfere? I thought libertarians hate nothing more than the government? It all boils down to changing the behavior of the American consumer (that includes living on credit) and to create attractive products.
Rich Mazur
30 Aug 2018  #865

The government should interfere whenever the country as a whole is at risk. Unchecked and unsustainable deficit spending and trade deficit falls into this category.

If your kids or your wife drove you close to bankruptcy because they are "addicted" to shopping - which simply means they are financially irresponsible idiots - would you start looking for a shrink, a 12-step program, or just cut off the money sources like credit cards? Nothing personal here.

Changing idiots into geniuses is not in the government tool box. What is in that tool box is (1) laws that can prohibit, but not compel, and (2) taxes. Tariff is nothing else but a tax on irresponsible and economically damaging behavior - buying foreign goods. That's on the consumer side.

It's also a tax to remind the domestic companies that there is a negative consequence to the American society when they exercise the constitutionally permitted act of closing a factory and moving it to China. They are indeed free to do it. The US government can't stop them but it is constitutionally permitted to express its displeasure by slapping a tax on the goods made outside and shipped to the US.

This fix is immediate and can easily be made moot by bringing that factory back home. So simple that even I understand it.
Being a financial moron has nothing to do with political orientation. Actually, libertarians are the biggest idiots around because their governing philosophy is another form of religion. And that is why they will never be taken seriously.
TheOther
30 Aug 2018  #866

This fix is immediate and can easily be made moot by bringing that factory back home.

What happened to the conservative's darlings, the free market and fiscal responsibility? Now we regulate the market and enjoy deficit spending? That's communism or evil socialism, if I believe the red-hatted clowns out there. Let's assume for a moment, we would be able to force our corporations to bring all their factories back home. What would happen? The labor costs would explode (compared to the costs in a third world country), resulting in a huge price increase across the whole spectrum of products that no ordinary American will be able to afford. On top of that, there's no way that the country could ever fill those jobs that returned home. You have to either increase immigration, or you count on automation which in turn would directly hurt the American worker.

just cut off the money sources like credit cards?

That's what I meant. Our whole economy is based on credit. There more you consume, the better. Paying back your debt? Not so important. That's a job for our children and grandchildren. The attitude of the people needs to change, or we will all go down the drain sooner or later.

it is constitutionally permitted to express its displeasure by slapping a tax on the goods made outside and shipped to the US.

Yes, but who's paying that tax (tariff, import duties, whatever you want to call it)? We pay it, not the corporations or the foreign countries where the factories are located. If you slap 25% on Chinese plastic crap for example, it's still much cheaper than anything made in the USA. So what will people continue to buy? The Chinese products of course, but now at a higher price. And the government pockets not only the amount added by the tariff, but also the higher sales tax on the now more expensive product. The regular guy can never win in this game.
TheOther
30 Aug 2018  #867

Speaking of "fiscal responsibility":

"President Donald Trump told lawmakers on Thursday he wants to scrap a pay raise for civilian federal workers, saying the nation's budget couldn't support it. ... We must maintain efforts to put our Nation on a fiscally sustainable course".

Ha ha ha ... I mean, ha ha ha ha ha ...

So we can afford a $1.5 trillion tax cut for the rich and a $716 billion military budget (not even talking about the welfare checks for our farmers), but we cannot pay for a lousy 2.1% wage increase that doesn't even cover the current inflation rate? Don't you love our RepubliCons?
johnny reb
30 Aug 2018  #868

Our whole economy is based on credit. There more you consume, the better. Paying back your debt? Not so important.

What ? Paying back debt is not important ? Then who pays it back ?
The average American dies with an average of $61,000 debt now.
Who pays that back ?
Socialism doesn't work when the other guys money runs out does it. lol
Rich Mazur
30 Aug 2018  #869

The regular guy can never win in this game.

And I will never be able to convince you so I will stop right now.
Macroeconomics is actually very simple. It only seems hard when you conflate emotions, habits, and human stupidity as constants. You also refuse to look at other modern societies like Japan and Germany that enjoy huge trade surpluses. Instead, you engage in speculations to show that the US is somehow inherently incapable of having a trade surplus. That is, of course, not true but it would take a lot of effort on my part to show it to you. And, then, you would ignore my post anyway.

I am still waiting for how to eliminate our trade deficit and be like, say, Germany.

He won't touch it because the only answer he has is Hate Trump.
Obummer had eight years to fix it and all he did was add TRILLIONS to the National Debt.
Now it's Trumps turn to give it a try and all the Commie Left does is howl how it is all wrong without even giving it a chance.

F-off and sit back like we did watching you fail for eight years.
Why do you deny Trump besides the fact you don't like his personality and that he is making the Left look very bad.
Just look at the your deep blue Socialist States like California, Florida, Illinois, New Your all FAILING.
Face it........YOUR WAY DOESN'T WORK !
Trump certainly can't do any worse and so far has done much better by bringing 700,000 jobs back to America that Oblowme said were gone forever.

Now for the third time, you tell Rich how you would cure the trade deficit.
