Two things:
First of all, the U.S. is not a democracy, but a republic. We have two main parties which have taken turns in ruling the country for approx. 160 years. Almost like an oligarchy; and a quite corrupt one I might add.
In this republic, the public vote doesn't count. The outcome of the presidential election is decided by electoral votes and by the so-called Electoral College. An antiquated system (even Trump called it "rigged" before the election) which was originally implemented (simplified) to avoid that the population centers on the coasts always rule the rest of the country. This system is indeed rigged and has been manipulated big time by both parties through gerrymandering of districts, voter suppression and various other means. With the outcome that a - let's say - questionable individual has now been elected president by a minority which represents about 46% of voters..
Now look at Trump's actions and the chaos that surrounds him, and then tell me why the majority shouldn't be upset about this administration and oppose it.
