Haha... the famous "Bielefeldverschwörung". Yes, I've heard about it.
On a side note. There exists a theory in Poland that the name may come from the ancient Slavic language in which it was originally "Białe Pole". The last part of the name got translated into German, but the first part retained its transformed original Slavic term which meant white (weiß). A theory not without ground as the Slavic origin of the nearby name of the town of Soest seems to be well attested in the Arabic sources of the 10th century (read my post #458 in the thread linked below for the story).
