Coronavirus in Poland

Atch

fatalities are a better thing to track.

those are indisputably (if slowly) trending downward from a high over 30 a day in April

Don't want to be a Negative Nellie, but I don't really see any significant downward trend in fatalities from 30 April.

@Atch
of course there is, there hasn't been a day with over 20 fatalities in over two weeks... in late april there were several days with 30 or more... the rates go up and down a bit but the overall trend is clearly downward. compare any consecutive days in the second half april with the last seven days...

Some say, Corona is dangerous because there is no Corona.

29 May 2020  #2284

Numbers, numbers, numbers!!!

There were 13 fatalities (average age 75) up from 10yesterday (age range from 45-95, average age 74)

Hospitalizations (running total) are down 213 to 2035 from yesterday's 2248, the lowest number since April 1!

So the 10-15 a day fatality trend continues as does the decrease in hospitalization (I'd expect that to bump up again some before falling again).

I've read the longterm health consequences are worse than thought....even two thirds of the survivors stay weaker, probably won't ever get back to normal.

mafketis
29 May 2020  #2286

even two thirds of the survivors stay weaker

two thirds of which survivors (given that about 80% are asymptomatic)? two thirds of those hospitalized? what's the average age of hospitalization?

the media in many countries is doing everything it can to stoke fear in an irresponsible manner.... when you look at the raw numbers things aren't nearly as scary as the headlines screaming "We're doomed!"

I don't believe that!

Since you're German.... I have to take the possibility that you're being serious.... seriously....

Anyhoo, I stopped paying any attention at all to the way the media frames things and just look at numbers (in context as much as possible).

This more you look at numbers vs the way that the media frames those numbers.... the less scary this is (unless you're over 75 and have other serious health problems and/or are in a nursing home).

I can't be anything but serious...seriously! :)

No masks outside, taramtamtamtam.

PolAmKrakow
30 May 2020  #2291

@kaprys
As soon as they announced it was happening on Saturday everyone pretty much immediately stopped wearing them. Now when the 6th comes and the rest of things begin to open, a sense of normalcy will return.

kaprys
30 May 2020  #2292

Some are still wearing masks. Not sure whether they forgot they don't have to or for personal reasons.

Torq
30 May 2020  #2293

No masks outside, taramtamtamtam.

Still the same, or even higher, number of new cases than when the masks were introduced, taramtamtamtam.
People much more careless and using neither masks nor keeping social distance, taramtamtamtam.
One doesn't need to be a prophet to predict how it's going to end, taramtamtamtam.
In any case, I'm still wearing my mask outside, taramtamtamtam.
Not willing to catch the sh*te now, when all the half-wits think the epidemy is over when it's not, taramtamtamtam.

Not willing to catch the sh*te now, when all the half-wits think the epidemy is over when it's not

*nods*

...when the idiots want to forget about it and catch it, please do so without me! I will keep on taking all precautions I can!

Especially as now more and more is learned about the longterm health consequences...there is no good way about "herd immunity" when half of the infected stay sick for a long time with dramatically reduced organ functions, maybe forever, even after being "cured" of Covid-19! It is definitely NOT the flu!

Torq
30 May 2020  #2295

I will keep on taking all precautions I can!

Exactly! I can't stop thinking about the 18-year-old boy (perfectly healthy - no additional medical conditions apart from Covid) from Milan, who had to have both his lungs transplanted because his were "burnt" by Coronavirus.

Outside, taramtamtamtam!
The key word here, taramtamtamtam.

Torq
30 May 2020  #2297

@Kaprys
Especially when there's wind, taramtamtamtam!
And the virus can "spread his wings" and fly joyfully between people with no masks, taramtamtamtam.
Who don't keep social distance, because "it's safe now", taramtamtamtam.

Remember that funeral in Spain where 60 people caught the virus, taramtamtamtam?
They too were outside, taramtamtamtam.

How long are you willing to go on like this?

Torq

Read my previous posts

Couldn't be arsed.

have a snickers

I'm allergic to peanuts.

taramtamtamtam

Why do we keep doing this, taramtamtamtam?

How long are you willing to go on like this?

Wearing masks? At least until we see significant drop in new cases.

Bratwurst Boy
30 May 2020  #2301

How long are you willing to go on like this?

There is no time limit to safeguard my health! I mean I work out, I don't drink/smoke, I don't take drugs, I eat healthy (mostly:), I'm not about to let some virus destroy my hard work....

I could ask you the other way around...when do you think it's time to stop taking care of yourself (and with that also of others)?

kaprys
30 May 2020  #2302

@Torq
Yet you felt bothered to mock my taramtamtamtam. So I'm doing it to entertain you :)
You are welcome.
And since you are too lazy to read my previous opinions on why wearing masks helps, I see no reason to explain it to you.

Yet I see no reason to wear one when on a walk with my dog or the person I live with with no strangers around.

Lenka
30 May 2020  #2303

At least until we see significant drop in new cases.

So you put no limit, even let's say 5 years?

I'm not about to let some virus destroy my hard work....

There is plenty of diseases that can do that. Even a flu. I knew a 16 year old girl that died of it. So why didn't you use mask earlier and why should you stop after Covid?

And what you guys think of the reports that wearing mask all the time might be harmful to health?

PolAmKrakow
30 May 2020  #2304

Now at least people have choice. Clearly the infection rate in every community is different. Spreading fear in Krakow over what is happening in Warsaw or Silesia is nonsensical. Wear as mask if you want to, dont wear one if you dont want to, a policy that actually makes sense. Social distancing, no hugging, kissing and handshaking should be the policy really. Close quarters and contact spread the virus, the scientists have already said it is not a wind born contagion. Its not going to fly on the breeze from the mines of Silesia to the parks of Warsaw.

Torq
30 May 2020  #2305

I'm doing it to entertain you :)

Thank you, that's very thoughtful of you. :) However, I still see no reason to celebrate (with "taramtamtamtam" or any other onomatopoeia) the loosening of safety rules, which will most likely cause people to be less careful and lead to rise in new Covid cases.

So you put no limit, even let's say 5 years?

No limit. I'm 40 years old, so I wouldn't mind living even a bit longer than 5 more years.

Bratwurst Boy
30 May 2020  #2306

So you put no limit, even let's say 5 years?

Nope...why should I?

Imagine it's the good 'ol Pest...would you say after 5 years of it ravaging Europe: "Enough! I'm doing away with all security measures and even if it means a death sentence staying safe is much to restricting and annoying, I want my freedom back."

?

Many experts say now Corona will stay with us...it's also mutating already, so in one form or another, it won't just leave one day again...it's here to stay. That's why we need next cures and vaccines...but personal safety measures will need to be kept too!

So why didn't you use mask earlier and why should you stop after Covid?

Maybe I should have, but I have been rarely sick and never ever got the flu...I was careless I guess...
This new virus changed alot of things...I doubt I will go buying groceries, or throw myself into a crowd without at least a mask ever again!

Wind of moderate-intensity can transport respiratory droplets of bigger size (between 400 and 900 micrometers) up to a distance of five meters in an urban setting - and that happens within a couple of seconds.

Even more importantly, smaller droplets (between 100 and 200 micrometers) can be transported up to 11 meters within 14 seconds, which is several times over consistently cited safety recommendations.

Source: news-medical.net/news/20200426/Microclimate-and-turbulent-wind-can-influence-COVID-19-spread-over-long-distances.aspx

...and imagine people joyfully giving up masks outside (whilst making "taramtamtamtam" sounds). :-/

PolAmKrakow
30 May 2020  #2308

Panic mongering, thats all it is. No proof anyone has been infected by the wind. Social distancing measures say two meters because thats the real area in which there is liability. I can spit 11 meters with a good wind, so any monkey with a sneeze can put gems in the air. Wear a mask or not, its choice, as it should be.

Torq
30 May 2020  #2309

And what you guys think of the reports that wearing mask all the time might be harmful to health?

Depends on the type of mask; proper ones with a breathing valve are safe enough (safer than Covid-19 in any case!).

Bratwurst Boy
30 May 2020  #2310

Wear a mask or not, its choice, as it should be.

Actually I agree by now. Force begets resistance! As we by all now see...even if it was necessary in the beginning IMHO, to not to overwhelm our health sector.

And as long as I can secure my own health with wearing a mask and adhering to other working safety measures, why should I care if someone else has a death wish?

We live in liberal, free democracies...not a nanny state...if people want to risk to get sick, to suffer long term health complications or to die, who am I to take this away from them?

I mean it's the same as with cigarettes or alcohol or fast food....they are not good for you but it should be your own choice if you indulge or not. I wouldn't want to live in a nanny state either.
