But my grandfather and his brother (who lived entire life and died in Canada as old man, fought in WWII as Canadian soldier on Japanese front, his life was saved by Polish man) and, their father (my grand-grandfather that was miner for 20 years on Alaska) with his brother took their share of American dream. They had their saloon in Utah, Salt Lake City. They came to USA form Austro-Hungarian Empire, region of Serb Krajina.
They wanted to move business to Chicago back then but started WWI and my grandfather with 18 years escaped from home to join in USA allied Serbian army that was back the recuperating in Egypt. During the war, brother to my grand-grandfather died and after the war business was sold. Half of money was given to my grandfather who settled in Serbian (Yugoslavian) northern province of Voivodina and other half of money took my grand-grandfather who went back in place of their origin, same place where was born Nikola Tesla, Smiljan, in Lika in former Austro-Hungaria and at that moment newly liberated and formed Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In WWII, my grandfather, with his entire family (pregnant wife, 5 other children) finished in Hungarian concentration and then labor camps. So, after one month in camp, my father was born.
But they were lucky. My grand-grandfather (who was then 92 years old) was captured by Croat ustashe, with other 48 members of our clan and many other Orthodox Serbs, who died in worse imaginable ways of mutilations. Some were killed with hammers, knives, skinned alive, pushed in deep mountain pits. My grand-grandfather, in particular was burned alive with his wife. In same house was father to my grandmother. While houses that were set on fire were burning, surviving members of clan and other villagers who were in wood, sow that ustashe pushing many houses from all sides with tanks so human meat could be seen between bricks and on tanks.
That is how ended one dream of coming to Chicago. That is, how, after all, died one American dream.
