Voter ID is a document that says the person is a US citizen, and legally allowed to vote. DL does not say that.

Most western countries including Poland have a simple ID card that can be produced at most of your interactions with the state, wojwod, gmina etc. I think it would be wise to adopt this in the US - I suspect if the federal govt tried to do that the opposition would be partly from immigrant groups but even stronger from the 2nd Amendment nutjobs and it would be knocked out of congress from both sides.

As far as voter ID's, the feds can use the same gentle technique is persuading the populace to accept them that they did in gently asking everyone who wants to enter the US to pleeeease show a valid passport. Try to do it without one and see how nice they can be.

As for putting guns in the hands of ordinary people we are talking about peacetime not wartime. In wartime then a good example of a people's army is the afghans keeping the USSR tied up for 10 years with a few pea shooters and some WWII bazookas.

That's no reason to do something for which there is no appetite whatsoever in Poland. Nobody here wants guns to be easily available to the public.

That's very true. They did have the opportunity to support the Warsaw uprising in 1944 by an airdrop of guns and ammunition, maybe even troops, while the Russians just waited on the other side of the Wisla while the Germans finished off the Poles. Poland has no reason to be thankful for US help during the war. In fact the US is partly responsible for allowing the Iron Curtain to be set up and delivering Poland into Russian empire.

The US supported Hitler in 1939 and didn't enter the war until 1942. In fact it may have been better if they hadn't bothered joining the war at all so that Germany and Russia could fight it out to the death.
