Samhain is an Irish word. Hallowe'en in Irish is Oíche Shamhna (the evening of Samhain) pronounced 'eeee-ha how-na'. It's very hard to render Irish words phonetically in English. That's the nearest I can manage.

The four festivals are Lughnasa (the harvest), Samhain ( New Year), Imbolc (beginning of spring), Bealtaine (the May festival). I think it's lovely that they've survived at least to some extent. There's a lovely ancient Irish song Thugamar féin an Samhra Linn (We bring the summer with us) which we still teach in Irish schools. Originally it was sung as a summer pastoral during the May procession to celebrate Bealtaine.

'Thugamar linn é ón choill chraobhaigh, Samhradh buidhe ó luighe na gréine, Cuileann is coll as trom as cárthain, As fuinseoig ghléigeal bhéal an átha.'

I've also heard pronunciations like SAH-win or suh-WEEN, would those be different dialects or different imaginings of the pronuncation - an Irish co-worker told me when he went to school everybody sort of tried their own pronunciations and the teachers pretty much just let them...

Because there are several dialects the Department of Education came up with an attempt at a 'standard', An Caighdeán Oifigiúil, which is a mish-mash of three of the dialects put together. That's basically the form you learn in primary school. However, once you get to secondary school you'll have a teacher whose specific subject is Irish and they will generally speak with the dialect that either reflects the place they're from, especially if they're from a Gaeltacht area, or their Irish will the dialect of their choice reflecting the Gaeltacht area in which they've done most of their speaking practise. Now an example would be the word for "again" which most native speakers pronounce as arís but a large minority of them pronounce as aríst. The Caighdeán uses the former but I remember loads of teachers in school saying aríst so they weren't 'teaching' the pronunciation the way they were supposed to :)

Also you might have a teacher with Kerry Irish for the first three years of secondary and then a teacher with Galway Irish for the next two years. The worst thing is if you get a teacher with Donegal Irish because their pronunciation is so different to the other two. That's why the teachers don't insist on any particular pronunciation.

Just to give you a quick example:

An bhfaca tú (did you see?)

Galway Irish - on voka
Donegal Irish - a waaka
