Here I must disagree with you!
Russian is one of the key languages in the world, at least from a geopolitical point of view.
In addition, the Russians typically speak horrible English, that is, those who even speak it at all, worse in fact than the Poles:-)

rapidly fading in importance as countries are galloping away from the russian "sphere of influence"...

I look for Polish and Ukrainian to be more important in the future.

It'll be one long trot though, I can tell ya that!
As far as Polish extending her importance as an official EU language, that was one of my motivations for learning it.

Why? russia's economy is in the toilet, losing any and all political prestige while Ukraine has been showing itself as a leader with a young, dynamic leadership and muscular culture... I don't see a bright future for the russian language in Ukraine (and have heard many anecdotes of people switching languages due to the invasion).

The countries supporting Ukraine will grow in prestige (one possible reason for German and French waffling... they know a Ukrainian victory means diminished roles for them in the EU and a power shift toward the East).

It may be a silly song contest but I think the results of this year's Eurvision say a lot about cultural prestige Ukraine and the UK on top and France and Germany at the bottom and russia locked out in the cold....

Hungary, having hitched its wagon to russia will not prosper after the war....

That "sphere of influence" you mentioned will be about as tough to overcome as the rampant and widespread hegemony of English throughout the world!
