I recently read the results of a survey done by somebody like the Pew centre, can't remember exactly but anyway, the upshot of the ructions is that Americans nowadays feel they can't speak openly and keep their true opinions to themselves, despite their freedom of speech rights. Republicans are more likely to keep quiet than Democrats.

I used to be interested in politics when I was in my teens and twenties. Once I hit thirty, less so and I stopped voting in my thirties, except for referendums where my vote made a real difference.
