In this book famous German Jakob Grimm state that German mythology can`t be studied and understand without insight into the Slavic mythology. So in a 1000 pages of book Grimm writes, actually creates, German mythology, mostly using Serbian epic poetry presented to him by back then Serbian philologist Vuk Stefanovic who was often welcomed in Grimm`s house. When Goethe himself learned of Serbian epic poetry and mythology he regarded them to be stronger then Nordic Kalevala. Since then, many European and world readers of Grimm grow up on the fairy tales inspired by Serbian culture and never were aware of it (sure, Serbs are aware).

One of best examples is Tolkien that even studied Serbian language and by use of Serbian mythological explanations for Odin (actually Vodan- same God as Odin but in Serbian mythology precisely represent second aspect of Odin), created character Gandalf in his book Lords of Rings. That second aspect says how is Vodan rather alone and travel during night, have hat and wear dark blue tunic, etc.


Actually, Odin or to say Vodan (Wotan) even wasn`t highest ranked God in what is now Germany and on the west of Europe. Other deity held that position and it was Gausus, Gautatýr = germ. *ḡautan 'lärmen, schreien' - what in Serbian exactly means `galamiti, larmati, grajati` /all words have same meaning in Serbian `loudly yelling`/

At first, German meaning of `Wut` and connection to Wotan was influenced by `Vates, vatis` - Latin word and means `seer` or `obsessed`. German explanation was that to be `seer` had to be `obsessed`. Anyway, later German linguists were on the line that Latin Vates and vatis originates from Slavic Veles, Volos or Voloh.

He studied slavic languages, so he should had been a much better grip on slavic myths and history than you have on the germanic ones. And for him an independent identity of the nordic and germany mythology was never in doubt!

It has been tried to explain "Gautr" as one of the many nicknames of Odin, but these theories are contested.

Veles is a rather mysterious god. The problem is that we know very little about Slavic gods, much less than we know about Germanic gods. Written sources are scarce and mostly come from German chronicles desribing the Elbe Slavs or chronicles of the Kievian Ruthenia.

It is sometimes assumed that Veles might have had a centre of his cult in the present-day Wolgast in Eastern Germany: Wolgast < *Vol(os)ъgost'.

Another theory is that Veles was the opposite god to Perun. According to some, Perun would have been related to Thor-Donar, or in fact might have been a local variation of Thor-Donar in Kievian Ruthenia. In other words, much confusion and uncertainty about the Slavic pantheon of gods.

No, my dear, what was Slavic was Slavic. We share history to great extent. Nobody was first. Simple, to one moment of history your ancestors were Slavic and then they separated from Slavs (ie Sarmats) for all sorts of reasons. And its not the problem. Yes, nobody was first and we all are first. OUR common ancestors were first. Yes, they were Slavs and today`s Slavs preserved direct continuity with OUR common ancestors. But, considering those ancient Slavs were also ancestors to today`s Germans, it means that Germans aren`t guests on their land but natives, exactly same as today`s Slavs. Difference is only that today`s Slavs preserved direct linguistic and cultural connection to ancient Slavs, while today`s Germans, under circumstances, diverged from ancestral Slavic culture. Credit to today`s Slavs for direct lineage and credit to today`s Germans for being able to endure changes. See, I think that we all need ALL that, and traditionalism and also capability to change. Not to say that we all desperately needs scientific truth, in order to progress. If you ask me, that is why truth becoming available, that is why is this allowed to us to speak in this era. That is why Belgrade becoming important and that is why Serbia strengthen- to bring balance to West.

Interesting thing that they once measured Ukrainians as tallest and it came to be those sample people were from the region where Serbian refuges from Ottomans were settled.
