They must be thinking about increasing import hence insistence on north stream 2. ALL this hard work on the alterative 'green' technologies must be in vain. It has not progressed much. So as a prospect for a feasible solution for power production on the industrial scale, doesn't incur much faith in German businesses. If they are willing to invest so much capital into underwater pipeline that also is highly questionable from a political point of view.

The gas fields of the first two countries will soon run out, and Russia will take over part of their delivery, which would still keep their overall influence neglible. This kind of economic dependence was crucial for keeping the peace during the Cold War and the peaceful dissolution of the SU.


Indeed, this is all about the USA. Trump does not care over Russia, if he really was concetned he would not lie about the true scale of Russian gas exports. He simply wants Europe to buy the more expensive American gas.

Well, but that what Germany had been doing here. That is the problem. I mean either you're a part of NATO or not. If you're there certain number of things you shouldn't be doing - i.e. strengthen economically a number one adversary in Europe of the said alliance. Unless you're a trojan horse of Russia that is.

It goes beyond normal way the allied states compete with each other. I guess Germany could get away with it because no one in USA was really bothered about all those details. Besides all countries of the NATO were doing it to some or other extent i.e. making money on deals with Russia.. None went so far though as Germany.

Is that course is a really good thing for Germany? Could it work well? In a shout run - possibly.
I don't believe however that so clause ties with Russian are beneficial for the Germany in a long run. I could be wrong of curse (what do I know?).

IF however German elites hold opinion that it is a very beneficial for their country (not only for them) to have this kind of close ties with Russia. In that case they should have consider possibility that such a stance is not compatible with their NATO obligations and membership.

Europe, the EU, will have to react to that. NATO as we know it is at an end. Also the world trade...that means everything will change, the cards will be reshuffled...

For Europe it won't make any sense anymore to stay beside the US, being called and treated as enemies. So IMHO our whole relationship with Russia and also China will change too.

It makes sense for these "enemies" to become allies....especially economically, but maybe even militarily. Europe alone has no chance, and now that the US is giving us the boot, the best solution is to look elsewhere...
