For us it was a fvcking nightmare. Everything closing down around you, soup kitchens opening, no jobs to get, everything getting only worse and never better.
I would agree with that. Sadly, I don't think it's too dissimilar today.
posting old British Folk Music.
I always liked Cat Stevens. Not so much Donovan although he was a bit before my time. Some good tunes there Milo.
Here's a cat Stevens one I always liked although it's a bit melancholy.
You can hear traces of the gospel tradition in some of her music.
Her mother was a frequent backup singer for Aretha Franklin and Soul music (a personal fave of mine is a combination of R&B with pop and gospel....
Soul music reached a peak in the "golden decade" of 1964-74 (give or take a year on either side) one of the richest periods in American music....
One thing that's great about it is that beyond all the hits there were tons of great music being produced in different cities and even collectors can make new discoveries
A few songs I really, really like
Memphis soul with style (this is like a tone poem of driving in the American south circa 1972-4....
One of the underestimated strengths of Northern Soul was a kind of emotional intensity not found in Southern Soul... she sounds like she means it...
People think of disco as a late 70s phenomenon but elements can be found as early as 1973 in Philadelphia soul
One of the underestimated strengths of Northern Soul was a kind of emotional intensity not found in Southern Soul
Be careful when you post about "Northern Soul" because it was also a version of Soul Music that was championed in the UK. Mainly American stuff, but I don't know if it's the same as what you call "Northern Soul".
I don't know if it's the same as what you call "Northern Soul".
In the US "Nothern Soul" refers to where music was recorded. The big recording centers for Soul in the golden decade
Northern Soul: NYC area, Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia (tended toward vocal groups and/or dance and funk along with some very raw emotional ballads)
Southern: Memphis, Mussel Shoals, Birmingham, Miami, New Orleans (tended towards solo artists and grooves rather than funk, ballads were more about resilience than despair, sometimes country influence can be heard though 'country soul' a subgenre of Southern Soul is more r&Bish.
There were hybrids... Aretha Franklin was from the North but her career only took off when Atlantic records sent her south to Mussel Shoals. Lots of Chicago records were made by artists from the South etc.
People think of New York and/or California when they think of disco but it really began in Philadelphia. Lots of disco elements in this 1972 record from the Philly girl group First Choice
You clearly know nothing about music bar a very limited and narrow range of classic rock.
Northern soul was a specifically up tempo selection of rare 1960s soul music. The geographic label came from British music journalists attempting to define something they couldn't comprehend. Rare up tempo dance records were played all across Britain and Ireland as a counter to the dire state of AOR and its endless noodling. Rockmusic went up its own fundamental and resulted in everything from punk to reggae, disco to funk. Northern soul became synonymous with clubs in Manchester then Wigan and finally Blackpool but was played in London the English West Country and other places in Scotland and Ireland.
Northern and Southern music in the US is generally geographical ie it depended on where the record company was based but more importantly where the session musicians hailed from. Muscle Shoals is a good illustration of this division. Muscle shoals had two recording studios the second founded by the White dudes who arguably played the most soulful music but left the original studio to go north and play in NY. Being recording studios they recorded anyone that would pay and neither studio had a house sound.
Stax a southern label had a house sound, Chess and Motown had house sounds. The NY studios of which Atlantic were by far the largest didn't have a house sound. A lot of the classic Northern soul tracks were produced in independent studios but the defining thing was their up tempo beat that young working class kids could dance to. Now there is a PHD in drawing similarities between soul and punk both kicked against the self-indulgent crap AOR was churning out and thank god for it. Talking about soul and punk, metal and folk were the only things that came close to the vibe youngsters wanted to feel even if they didn't know it.
In the U.K. it refers to very fast soul records that people danced very fast to in certain venues, mostly in Lancashire, in the early 70s. The port of Liverpool was the country's main conduit across the Atlantic and sailors brought records over. Some of the DJs used to go to Detroit and bring back anything fast.
There were some singers who were completely unknown in America but who had fans in DJ. The dancing is more likely to happen on cruise ships or the Costa del Sol nowadays, or in nice hotels for special weekends since they're all early Boomers with disposable income and plenty of time.
And in the old days they took speed. Now they take statins.
I mean I'm not religious....but THAT....something about it makes my artist heart happy...and this soothing music when you will call it that....I found myself looking and listening for a long while....just like that...quite hypnotic!
Ever heard of that before? Is that a kind of fashion I missed? Curious.....
Mi favorite Memphis label was Hi, which had it's own studio sound, organ and strings and a horn line formed a base over which the singers floated, often going in and out of falsetto....
One of the greatest... it's very simple but the horn riff at .35 makes me ridiculously happy....
Not as well-known but an amazing artist nonetheless....
I have just three posts for you on here for you tonight, all from one band called Earthless.Formed in 2001 in San Diego and still going. They are heavy, bluesy and a bit psychedelic.See what you think.
This is a cover of a great British Rock band called The Groundhogs and it's a cover called "Cherry Red".
Last one, this is almost Black Sabbath heavy and is called "Black Heaven"
Speaking of religious music, Scotland has an amazing tradition (I know virtually nothing of it though I'm sure some posters here can provide some information....)
One of the weirdest types of music I've ever heard was also from Gaelic speaking Scotland and said to be a type of church singing. Five or six women were singing (a capella? I don't remember any instrument) but they were singing dfferent melodic lines that separated and came together. Very otherwordly but I can't find examples on youtube...
Sounds like sean-nós singing which I'm sure exists in Scotland as well as Ireland. The more commonly known type of unaccompanied singing from Scotland is the call and response technique which apparently suited the rites of the reformed faiths. This style traveled with the people to North America and it has been suggested provides the genesis of gospel.
Sean-nós though is not church type singing its just in the old style as the name translates to.
Serbian metal band SVARUN on the theme of Roman crimes on Slavs in Arkona >
Lyrics.. English translation:
I still feel the fire when Roskilde flares up, the scoundrel's insolence when weapons are fired, Trying in vain to shape destiny, mistakenly thinking that God is dear, But destruction comes to him, and the death that follows it, through the hand of justice that will not spare anyone, Let him receive now that your body breaks, a crown and myrrh as a gift...
Valdemar! I call you brother! If anyone dares to stand before us, on him! And fire... And war!
Stanza 2:
The king's eye on my head reaches far, to the east, to the sea, Great wasteland, no soul or God anywhere, but I know where the Devil is hiding! Give me ships, weapons, men, a cross and let's go! There is no time, now the wind is right! Let the September twilight dawn this morning! Let everything stop!
Rome is ringing: Let Absalon sail! Let him forge bells with mighty weapons, Announcing that peace is coming!
I waited too long, To rush to the sun, But at last the ships will sail to the east, Let our warriors walk on the Wendish soil too!
Chorus:
And now it seems like yesterday that I started, But my eight years in the army have already passed, Endless sea, cold, modesty and fear, But in the end, the door is the door of my destiny
I've only seen a nightmare so far, Hell's Tooth - City of Arkona! You're getting tired, I know, and so am I, but now! We are here now!
Completion:
And death for death! Fear for fear! Let there be no surrender or deviation! For this hour we live... For this hour, do you need Let's die!
Second section
The trumpet is ringing! With a roar, let it begin! Sing with joy, do not grieve, do not drown!
Death for death!
Stanza 1:
I saw that the ships without end were riding towards the Sun they rush without sleep or fear iron and false words yes scepter ways!
Pull! Pull! That rope tighten up!
and sing don't speak flame of the heart burn up!
I understand! And oil the sword! One for logging be ready!
There will be blood Yes, there will be blood! Some flame burn up!
Neither life nor mercy nor days for them, that they are not human because they bear a black mark, I am their judge! I am their God! Swords, archers, now blow the horn!
May the force show us the primordial ways, because that was our fate from the beginning!
Stanza 2
They fall like bundles one after the other they look forward to dreams...
Bodies broken because of one word Before the altar whose corpse kneels to me...
Like ears of gold all the dead will rise Once again they will hold swords!
For the fallen brother, son, father and country! Arkona Immortal!
When the sun dawns over the new Archon, when the valleys where the heroes fell, Then call me, because others will also come, to celebrate with a song the freedom that must come...
Long live the immortal Arkona,
May the Immortal Archon last forever!
Chorus:
Moan, fire, sword and water, Above life is freedom...
Archona Immortal and indestructible!
Stanza 3
Valdemar! Arkona has fallen! False idols I fell into the sea!
The road of Karence, from Wend, I walk, To put an end to this war, Teslav will be a prince The Danish Principality of Rujan!
Stanza 4 (reprise of stanza 2):
They rise like the Sun one after the other They walk in the grove and sing loudly...
Bodies resurrected because of one word Before the altar that calls our name...
Like ears of gold, all the dead rise Hymns to the Sun are being sung once again!
For a living brother, son, Gods, country! Slavism is immortal!
tenor, bass: Now the cold September dusk drives away the Sun, and the roaring valley where we fell long ago, A shining idol beside a sumptuous throne, be sure that Arkona lives!
Long live the immortal Arkona,
Long live Arkona the Immortal!
Final section
Chorus:
And now it seems like yesterday, But I lost the mighty centuries in vain, Countless military, instead of breaking, They strengthened their spirit, strength, organization
I only see her live now, Golden crown - the city of Arkona! I'm getting tired, I don't have time or strength Because now we are here!
Completion:
And death for death! Fear for fear! Let there be no surrender or deviation! For this hour we live... For this hour, I am sure now - Let's die!
....we all have experienced our up and downs in our histories, Crowie. We had honor....got humiliated.....got back up again....will probably fall again.....it's the run of the world!
Just that it takes long and sometimes even longer...these up and downs have their own rules and time, that needs patience, often lifetimes.
In the meanwhile, before all return to the star dust, its clear that EU isn`t on the European path. So, we Serbians shows the path. We start by responding to insults. We take back Arkona and give peace to the blood of ancestors spilled there.
