You may have noticed that for the last few weeks I have avoided posting replies to Pawian's increasingly insane posts. There is a good reason for this, he is an azzhole. And he might like this song, because he likes Punk or Punky Rock. This is for him.
The name Cheb Mami suggests rai, an Algerian genre originating in Oran, Algeria...
The genre is generally less distinct musically from other Arab music and more distinct in terms of lyrics which often touched on political or sexual topics (and so very much not popular among strict islamists).
A pioneer in the genre and one of my favorite Arabs singers was Cheikha Rimitti, a cultural icon whose lyrics were often openly sexual (one early record calls for women to have sex before marriage). Some of these were similar to traditional songs sung in all-female company but she brought them to a wider audience.
Often at odds with the government there were times where she was not allowed on the airwaves and she supported herself through private performances, mostly at weddings (a mainstay for Arab performers). She eventually moved to France. Toward the end of her life she had a career resurgence as younger generations discovered her music and she also recorded again.
This is Saida a song with sensual and political overtones with double meanings...
Secondly he was touring a new album and the crowd wanted to hear Harvest. He stopped the gig and told the crowd if they stopped calling for harvest songs he would play something they had heard before. At the end of the show he paused and then played the same new songs a second time. Gotta love the man.
With all the sickening antisemitism in the world today, not least coming from our own Novichok traitor,I thought I would remind you of the Jewish contribution to Western Rock music.Peter Green was Jewish.
Well, he has always denied the fact that he is Jewish. He certainly seems to be anti religion. But the debate rages on.Whatever the truth is, he was never brought up as a Jew.
