Do you do business in Russia?
I do in fact! I mentioned earlier that I'm in the US on an investment visa (not the residency granting E-5, but also an E class). Necessarily, the funds I am transferring are Russian, and CIS in origin.
Russia is both a great place to do business and a terrible place to do business for the same reason - because it is still in a state of "Wild West". Some people can manage, others break. To me, business is interesting in both countries, and I also find difficulties in operating in both - in different ways and at different times.
I will try to be objective.
Pros:
1) Russia has the benefit of a low starting base. Everything is easier to do, and faster to get off the ground because it is still so far behind and there is much catching up to do.
2) This benefit of a low starting base, or in some cases zero starting base, results in some things in Russia being paradoxically better than they are in the United States. For a long time - a simple example I used was the quality of mobile data in Moscow and New York. It was better in Moscow, not because it was wealthier than New York, but simply because their was not much existing infrastructure and they simply bought the best and newest off the shelf. Contrast this to the evolutionary pace of improvement in New York, dominated by Verizon and ATT. Another example of where Russia is ahead of America for this reason is the interactions with the government. Everything in Russia is digitized as far as simple government services through their eGov platform. In New York you can spend half a day running between the DMV, the SS Office, USCIS, etc.
3) In the end, I am Russian and would prefer to help Russians.
Cons:
1) It has a low starting base. If you want to be really big, perhaps you will never become as big in Russia as you would in the United States.
2) Money is f*ckin hard to raise. Russians think that if a project doesn't do 20% returns in first year it's a **** project. If it doesn't return initial investment in 5 years - fuggedaboutit. In America it's normal for people not to expect PROFITS for 10 years, understanding that growth is more important that just minting cash.
3) Putin. Not because I don't like Putin, but because everybody else does not like Putin - in the west I mean. The baggage over the years has accumulated. Some of the sanctions are sticky and annoying - as I mentioned in previous post. But believe me when I tell you they only breed resentment.
