Enjoying the perks of democracy and siding with their enemies was something people have always done.
only as an antipode
If you ask some of those "conservatives" about their geopolitical world view, and more specifically about the role of the countries between Russia and Germany, you'll get some rather revealing answers. Usually something involving Bismarck, Reinsurance Treaties, Rapallo and some other buzzwords. It gets a bit funny though when they end up defending Putin alsongside the "anti-imperialistic" far-left.
Just as at Nuremberg,
Experts knew already in 1945 that
the SU was most likely behind the massacre in Katyn and that the Molotov-Ribbentrop likely included an agreement about the partition of Poland. The SU denied this and prevented experts from finding definite proof, until they eventually admitted to in in the 90s (which Putin has since then tried to downplay). The SU was of course still deemed as the culprit in publications.
The same will happen with atrocities commited during the war. As long as Russia controls the areas where the crimes happened, it will be impossible to find "definite" proof, but they will be held responsible unless they can produce some extraordinary counter-evidence.
