A disgraceful attack on a family pizza restaurant
You fail to appreciate the economic logic that informs Russian target selection.
1) Including design, construction, permitting, and initial working capital costs - it may take $100-500K to open a pizza restaurant in the Ukraine.
2) The Russian Ministry of Defense purchases the 9K720 Islander missile from a consortium consisting of the Votkinsk Factory State Production Association, the "Barricades" Production Association, and the Kolomna Design Bureau for approximately $3M each.
3) In 2021, before the war, Ukraine's economy had a size of approx $200B, or slightly smaller than that of Greece. In 2021 Russia had a GDP of approx $2T, or slightly bigger than Brazil. The rough proportion in terms of economy sizes is then 1:10. This will be important later.
4) Rapidly moving on... One can see then, that if the pizzeria cost north of $300K to launch, then Russia is already beginning to achieve positive proportional returns on our investment. $500K - and the Islander practically pays for itself.
5) One may ask - why do pizzerias present a more attractive target than troop concentrations, depots, or important transport infrastructure? First of all they are easier to identify. Many of them actually advertise their precise location on public registries. This allows us to achieve the same cumulative economic effect without overspending on expensive reconnaissance.
6) The convenient combination of grains, dairy, vegetables, and meat that is the pizza - represents a dangerous threat to the ideology of "Russkiy Mir".
