I read the book Boys in Zinc - by Svetlana Alexivich. Not her best but very poignant about the senseless loss of life in Afghanistan - USSR casualties were far higher than those sustained by the US and it's allies, mainly because of poor equipment, bad tactics, no front line medicine etc. They were hidden away when they came limping back to Minsk and found their girlfriends had married someone else.

Russia already lost the campaign against the power stations. Spent most of their missiles and Ukraine not only did not freeze in darkness during winter - it even restarted energy exports to the EU.

Since the war began, Ukraine won back half of territories grabbed by Russia: large parts of Kyiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Kherson oblasts. Basically everywhere except for Donbas where they are grinding Russian forces from fortified positions and very slowly give ground.

Sometimes a country needs to wage war to assure its independent existence in the future - just like Poland fought tooth and nails against the Bolsheviks in 1919-21. Sometimes there is simply no other solution.


US may be playing its global power games but in this instance our (and Ukrainian) interests align with American ones: we all want and need weeker, impotent Russia. But for us and Ukraine this need is not an element of global game, it's our raison d'etat.
