Ukraine has more than 3 times smaller population than Russia. Which means if they hope to win, they need all hands on deck and nobody running.

I didn't realize people in the West were oblivious of this taking place. In Russian Telegram, there's a video everyday of Ukrainian street kung fu battles between recruiters and civilians.

Sometimes the recruiters win, and the civilian is unceremoniously stuffed in the back of a party wagon.

However, sometimes the civilian wins. Especially if the person was a talented judoka or Greco-Roman wrestler.

I've seen some videos where Ukrainian recruiters were crashed head first into the asphalt, by guys trying to get away.

Then you are horribly educated, one of the main reasons for rights and privileges to be extended to the public at large was for more men to earn the duty of fighting for them.

France under Napoleon had one of the largest fighting willing armies mainly due to this reason. Willingness to fight and die for it also meant larger number of men on the battle field (meaning larger potential for military losses)

Biggest meatgrinders evolved during the era of democratisation and nationalism after Napoleon, most knowingly with WW1 creating such large numbers of casualties that military doctrines, industry and focus had to be changed and society became more aware of the catastrophes of war.

Which again creates bewilderment and lack of understanding of Russias agression in Ukraine from a western point of view.
