The only role Reagan had was to weaken and bankrupt the Soviets

Exactly, that is called "Greasing the Wheel" that brought the wall down.
Reagan was without a doubt the best president of our life time.

Gorby et al were the catalysts, Reagan the lynchpin, I'll give ya that much.

When Trump pulls off what NO other President could do and this will be one of the greatest achievements in decades! Im sure the Dems will find a way to condemn it, just from their unconditional hatred and spite against him.

chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-north-korea-denuclearization-20180306-story.html

Trumps pressure campaign and tough talk are beginning to show some results against NK

And if its another stall tactic to buy time, Im sure theres a contingency plan for fat boy.

When Trump pulls off

It's not "when", but "if". I have my doubts though that North Korea is sincere, because they've pulled the same stunt before. If Trump's successful, then good - one less problem to deal with.

Its probably just another NK ploy, same as the past to develop their technology. At least Trump has made every attempt to solve it peacefully first.

Oh since before he was even elected.
They have thrown up road blocks for him at every turn. (Without success)
A 20 month Russian probe investigation on him that has turned up NOTHING !
In fact the investigation backfired and turned up lots of obama's, Crooked Hillary's, and the Democratic Party crimes.
Have you seen the latest ?
An Australian diplomat whose tip in 2016 prompted the Russia - Trump investigation previously arranged one of the largest foreign donations to Bill and Hillary Clinton's charitable slush fund efforts, documents show.

Former Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer's role in securing $25 million in aid from his country to help the Clinton Crime Families Foundation Slush Fund to fight AIDS is chronicled in decade - old government memos archived on the Australian foreign ministry's website.

If there was any justice in the Country obama, crooked Hillary and Bill Clinton would look so good in orange jump suits with 'Federal Penitentiary' written on their backs.

Perhaps, ICE should stop admitting Australians into our country as a punishment for interfering in our politics and costing the US tax payers millions of dollars. Remember Obama`s feeble attempt when he threw the Russian diplomats out? Trump should crack down on Aussies who over stayed their visas and deport them with the rest of the criminal Illegal aliens.

A 20 month Russian probe investigation on him that has turned up NOTHING !

The only criminal evidence they found so far has been liked to the Dems, thats why Muller wont stop looking. The country is running out of patience with this hoax!

USA invites Daesh to increase its power in Afghanistan

There is a mixed picture of the situation in Afghanistan now. The country's government makes many attempts to achieve peace agreements with armed groups of the Taliban movement. The reason for this turn of events lies not only in the fast-approaching parliamentary election scheduled for October

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone... many countries have supported the Taliban al Qaeda al nusra on and off - USA Israel Pakistan Turkey Qatar are just A few names. Yet every neo con gets their panties in a bunch about Hezbollah and Iran (who have never attacked Americans on us soil)

They're only doing this because the us had to put them somewhere... guess the shoe dropped on them allowing Isis to chill in motor coaches in deir ezzor as Assad takes back control.. even iraq is now rebuilding its borders with Syria- no borders, no country (some dudes living in deserts in a tribal society can understand that but supposedly smart educated liberals cant... but that's another story)..

Also chinese own the largest mineral with mostly gem mines still in Afghani hands. A big cut of the emerald trade in that area (And also poppies of course) goes towards such fundraising

The USA has in return higher tariffs on other products. This trade war is completely pointless and self-harming for both sides.

Dirk diggler
5 Jul 2018  #311

Well if there weren't disproportionate tariffs there wouldn't be a need for it. The trade deficit was over 60.billion with germany in 2017. They have a lot more to lose than us does, and Merkel knows it.

Btw thanks to trumps steel tariffs, us steel is opening up a bunch of new facilities - first time in 30 years

Tacitus

Well if there weren't disproportionate tariffs there wouldn't be a need for it

Indeed, there is no need for it. But since when has Trump followed basic logic. It is easier to tell the people in the rust belt states that evil foreigners have screwed them over, instead of the truth that American car companies failed to properly adapt to a changing market.

Dirk diggler
5 Jul 2018  #313

That's half the truth

evil foreigners have screwed them

And thats the other half. To this point we never had a guy with some balls to use the leverage he has. Foreigners simply took advatage of American incompetence by flooding our markets with cheap stuff at a very low tax while buying lttle of American exports (except raw materials) due to the huge tariffs on it. I can't think of any import coming to the us being charged 25 50 100 even as high as 300% tax and that's gotta change or us simply reciprocated and puts the same tariff on an imported good that a country puts on an American export

Since Trump is dumb and you are smart, how do we eliminate trade deficits?

I am holding my breath.

Tacitus
5 Jul 2018  #315

Update the statistics for example. It is a joke that computer companies like Google and Facebook who are worth billions and dominate the European market are hardly included there. And obviously, encourage your car companies and others to accomodate to the changed wishes of their people. People don't buy a Mercedes because it is 5% cheaper than an American car. Applying higher tariffs might have been a viable strategy 50 years ago, but not when few cars are exclusively build in one country anymore.

@ Dirk

There is little difference between the USA and the EU in terms of tariffs. The USA protects some areas with higher tariffs, and so does the EU.

Again, what can the US government do to eliminate the US trade deficit? I want a specific, step-by-step answer, not predictions.

What if the car companies and others refuse to accomodate to the changed wishes of their people? Arrest them?

Why is it that when other countries impose tarriffs it's not a trade war?

Why is it that when the US imposes tariffs it's trade war?

I will answer my own quetions so you will not have to: All that is becasue the fat and happy world got used to the US being a stupid world cop, a bottomless ATM, a garbage can for the surplus people no one wants, and where the world can export its unemployment, surplus goods, or both.

So when Trump say, f*** you world, he is instantly the bad guy. Right?

His job is to America Great Again, not Europe.

Too bad we have to discuss this on the Merkel/Polish family history thread, which has become like random chat now. All because the Eurps whined and complained about the Trump thread and had it closed.

We dont need their BMWs or anything else that Europe produces for that matter. The USA can survive on its own, how about Europe?

PAY YOU FRIGGIN NATO BILL, YOU LEACHES!!!!!!

It's about time (thanks to President Trump) that these free loading milk soppers get drubbed in their heads that freedom is not free.
I'm afraid the 'good old days' are over for the E.U.
The American tax payers and troops are tired of supporting and protecting their lazy asses.
Hide and watch the rude awakening as long as Trump is President.

The question I still can't answer is why Bush and Obama would let this bs last so long.

Tacitus
6 Jul 2018  #321

PAY YOU FRIGGIN NATO BILL, YOU LEACHES!!

There is no Nato Bill. And as pointed out several times before, even if Europe were to pay more for its' defence, the USA would not benefit from it, since it actually spends very little on the defence in Europe.

The American tax payers and troops are tired of supporting and protecting their lazy asses.

Troops such as? The soldiers in Germany are no combat troops and mostly responsible for logistics in Africa and ME. Those soldiers need to be paid either way, even if they were to return to the USA. This way Germany pays part of their salary and upkeep as stipumated in the treaties between the USA and Germany.

Or, take it from another angle. The American tax payers and troops are tired of supporting and protecting their unhealthy adventurism. Unhealthy, in every sense.

What can they do to reduce the trade deficit ? Start making things that are good quality, well priced and that people want to buy. I have an American lawnmower and it's great - just make another few billion of them and problem solved.

Of all the Trump and Brexit idiocy one of the weirdest facets is that the previously free trade Reps and UK conservatives suddenly reverse centuries of policy and decide that tariffs are good, that frictionless trade is bad and that they can ignore the business part of their constituency in favor of appeasing the many idiots among their voter base.

Poland has but many others have not.
I think Australia has too.

Start making things that are good quality, well priced and that people want to buy.

BS. I will make it short and simple. To exist is the US, an American factory worker has to make 30 per hour. In China, a factory worker making exactly the same things makes 3 per hour. Add to this the environmental regulations and health insurance, and how do you compete with China?

Today, you can build a world-class factory in any s***hole in Africa, and, from day one, it will produce your "good quality" things as easily as it would in Alabama.

So, again, how do we eliminate the US trade deficits? Please, no more talk about "quality". Start with that 30 vs 3 bucks per hour workers' pay.

Rich Mazur
6 Jul 2018  #327

To exist is the US

Sorry, it should be 'To exist in the US'

cms neuf
6 Jul 2018  #328

Well its short alright and its simple to the point of being feeble minded

German wages and regulations are higher than in the US yet it has a considerable trade surplus - it was only recently overtaken by China as the worlds biggest exporter. The reason is that it makes things people want and need.

As a qualified engineer you know there are many points of differentiation for your product not just quality - can be on efficiency, after service, long life, availability of spare parts et cetera et cetera. There are many examples of market leading US products including software, wine, high spec engineering, armaments et cetera.

Of course if you're making exactly the same stuff, but with the more expensive cost basis that the only way you can survive is massive subsidise - provided either by the US government or by US consumers in the form of tariffs. Those costs would dwarf the subsidising of NATO that you believe about all the time.

Your government needs to be honest that you cannot make the same stuff 10 times more expensive - deciding to reopen coalmines or impose tariffs are proven as nonsensical.

Rich Mazur
6 Jul 2018  #329

Well its short alright and its simple to the point of being feeble minded

...but you are still not answering the question what can the US feds do NOW to start eliminating trade deficits. Please, skip the explanations WHY we have it. And I don't care about Germany.

BTW, if tariffs are so proven to be "nonsensical", why does the EU put 10% tariff on the US cars, and China - 25%, while the US has 2.5% on theirs? Funny, isn't it, how that lens passes the light of wisdom only in one direction.

cms neuf
6 Jul 2018  #330

Nothing is going to work overnight and that Includes Tarriffs - because they only fix one side of the equation, Since they cannot force Europeans to buy substandard US goods.

more likely they will damage both sides of the equation since the EU or China would impose retaliatory tariffs.

Before the current moron was in charge the average level of tariffs into the EU was 3.5% and into the US was 2.5%. Of course there are some sectors where political support is strong including German cars. How ever overall it is hardly grossly unfair as Trump claims.
