It seemed to me that Merkel once again schooled Trump in pointing out that she actually knows how life under Russian dominion is and how utterly stupid his statement were. At timed like this I greatly appreciate what we have with Merkel. She is such a nice contrast to the Trump. She doesn't need to try ver hard, her very nature makes her look like a dignified diplomate, while Trump is a thuggish liar who gets owned again and again and can only hide his failure by releasing his rage his twitter.

Trump has simply been caught lying again with his statements regarding Germany and Russia. His blustering is simply an attempt to hide the fact that he has no leverage here. It is not Germany who needs protection from Russia, it is Poland and the Baltic states, those countries would suffer if the USA leaves Nato. Which is an empty threat, given that the Senate declared its support of Nato before Trump arrived. He is impressing no one here, he is not even capable of making any coherent arguments. All of his blustering is meant for his domestic audience, there is nothing else behind it. Merkel found that out in her first meeting with him when she had to give him a crash course in diplomacy to Trump.


Which is just another lie by Trump. It is around 25%, the rest are from other sources.

He was a decent chancellor who made two very important decisions for Germany (not participating in the illegal Iraq war and reforming its' labour market), but a constant embarassment once he retired. But since there is no law against what he does, and his conncections to strongmen like Putin and Erdogan are sometimes helpful (e.g. when negotiating about the release of German prisoners), he is tolerated.
