People who don't care about their civil liberties are eventually doomed to become slaves to the state. Think Soviet Union. The state acts in the best interests of the state, not its people.

Elections in Poland should be postponed. They wont be without outside political pressure. That thus far has been limited.

Saving my life and lives of others requires action. Inaction is not only the death of liberty but death itself. Sitting inside afraid to face something that less than 10% of people have gotten, and fewer still have serious problems with, after 6 weeks of quarantine no longer makes any sense. Simple rules of order are more than enough. The rest is overkill and meant to control people only.

Everyone wearing masks or a face covering today, but there are a whole lot more people outside. Typically this time of day I see 4 or 5 people when out walking the dog. Today at least 25 in same area I always go. I think PiS sent the message that by wearing the mask, it was ok to go outside. At least thats what it looks like.

I finally went to get some fresh milk yesterday.
Very few people wearing masks in the store, kids running all over and people ignoring the six foot social distancing.
The Governor issued an executive order to wear masks when you go into any building and no kids in the food stores.
I can honestly say that I am ASHAMED of my fellow Americans that ignored a couple of simple orders and risk lives in doing so.

No authority around to enforce those rules either.
It would be such poetic justice for all of those who ignored these orders to catch the virus and die to cull the brain dead in this country.

I hope like hell the Governor now extends the shut down for another two weeks to show these self serving idiots just who the boss is.

Of course they would just be rewarded with another $1200 welfare check if she did.

I tell you Americans are not taking this seriously as Poles are.All the offices are open,couple of my friends still doing daily chores,Freaking nuts.My wife said costco parking lot was full and the gas station had lines like usual (in NJ there is no self service by law).My attorneys and Accountant offices are functioning as usual.When will these idiots finally learn.Thank God I am stuck in Poland.A blessing in disguise.

Just back from bank near Rynek. Was at least 100 people walking in the square. Saw two without masks, but they looked dispensable so I am ok with it. Interested to see how they handle slow reopening starting Monday.

Elections in Poland should not be postponed. They should be abolished! . There is no point having elections when elementary religious rights, freedom to gather, move around, travel etc. are being withheld, and the entire citizenry are incarcerated.

I remember a incident 4/5 years back,I went to a Phillipino store in NJ and bought extra extra large eggs thinking they were double yoke eggs.Next day when I cracked the egg,to my surprise there was a fetus in it.I cracked 4/5 eggs out of the dozen and all same.I was so upset and drove to the county health department.The inspector immediately went to the store and called me that it is a Phillipino delicacy and told me to go and take the refund.I wonder what else you can get in China town in NYC.

I just read in online media B92 that unnamed Polish citizen escaped from Corona hospital in Sarajevo, Capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Muslim-Catholic federation within Bosnia where rule sharia law (Serb Republic is the other entity). Can you imagine a Pole in a hospital there, with all those Islamic marks (half-moons) around him, with all those Afro-Asiatic faces from Islamic league health care initiative telling him ``sleep well, you would be alright, you are in safe hands``. A Pole probably told himself - ``Halo Maria! Wtf, am I doing here``. So, man just, as I read, walked out in the middle of the day. Sure, he has better chances with Corona.

Anyway, God help him. Police tries to find him right at this moment. If he is lucky he would make to East Sarajevo that is part of Serb Republic and there he can surrender and move to hospital in peace and took a chance.

There's no longer denying it and I have to say it out loud: we have an idiot on a position of a spiritual leader of a Roman Catholic Church.
That's not the first of his controversial ideas but certainly the stupidest one. Such a degradation since John Paul II and Benedict XVI.

I think the only way to save the Church in a long run is to turn back to pre-Vatican II.

Let us give chance to our brother in Christ, Pope Francis. He did, at least, move things in direction of better relations within Christianity. That is for sure good for Poland and many other countries.

I used to think that too. But then I thought, why not pre-Vatican I (that's when Old Catholic churches separated from mainline RC)? Why not pre-reformation or even better pre-Great Eastern (or Western, depending how you look at it) Schism? Why not accept only the councils of undivided Church? But wouldn't that make us all Orthodox of western rite (and would that necessarily be a bad thing)?

There are no easy answers regarding the Church, and in the long run very little depends on us, ordinary Catholics. :-/

I think Political leaders are going to find out pretty quickly that people, meaning not the ultra rich, are not going to take much more of this. When people cant eat, they will take to the streets, and they will vote with anger and not thinking. PiS may not get the results they are hopping for if they push this election through. I can see a whole lot of people who may be tired of sitting around and losing money. Young people with no savings, and old people with only retirement, are not going to support them when things start getting real bad.

Or it could be that the Polish government did the right thing for once and shut everything down earlier than other countries, and this is why there are lower infection rates and deaths. With other countries there may well be other factors e.g how much testing has been done, population size, how far along a country is into the pandemic, population size etc. I don't think there is enough solid evidence to say the BCG vaccination is a significant factor.

The UK is not faring so well and the BCG was given universally to everyone from the early 50s until 2005. Obviously over time the vaccine will become less effective, but the NHS FAQ's website states that the BCG offers protection from the most severe forms of TB for at least 15 years, perhaps even up to 60 years. If that holds true, and there is some substance to these BCG claims, then the UK should have lower infection rates and deaths. It hasn't, simply because the idiots in power here let everything carry on as normal, despite an ever increasing death toll in China and Italy.

I agree they closed it up at the right time. That said, there are clearly 3 or 4 hotbeds in Poland. Close off those cities. Have the other cities practice common sense social distancing and safety measures. Warsaw is not the entire country, and I think every decision being made is with a focus on Warsaw. Event there, the numbers are minimal and manageable.

The problem we are already running into is business operators, small business, have been working on shoe string budgets to get through winter until tourists come back. Now, tourism wont restart until July at the soonest. More and more places going under each day in Krakow, and Katowice where I do a lot of business. Without small business, you have a really hard time jump starting employment. While Poland's efforts for economic protection are admirable, they aren't getting money into the hands of people who need it most.

I personally know some companies keeping people on payroll at 1/8 of salary, while forcing them to work full time. Of course the employees dont turn them in because then the lose the job completely. People are taking advantage of this crisis by abusing the most vulnerable people who have no other income.

That's what I've been saying repeatedly on this forum since long before Pope Francis said it. My word, the pope has been reading the PF all this time! The problem with Mother Nature is that she is not going to succumb to people like Donald Trump or Spike33, but she will always dictate her own terms to mankind just as she has done so many times before.

It may interest people to know that Ireland has announced that the virus is now contained and supressed amongst the general population. The Irish Minister for Health said it is "quite incredible" that every infected person is now infecting less than one other person, down from a rate of 4.7 at the start of this crisis." As we didn't close our borders and Poland did, then Poland may be in a similar situation soon. Does anybody know what the rate of infection number is for Poland at the moment??

However - and here's the problem, in Ireland (and I bet in Poland too) there are 'nests' of infection in nursing homes and residential care settings which account for most of the deaths and which haven't yet been eliminated. Anyway Ireland also says that despite the good news, restrictions may take months to lift entirely. So, anybody with predictions for Poland?? What next?

@ Cargo, thanks but I mean the R0 number. The R0 is the number of cases, on average, an infected person will cause during their infectious period. It needs to be under one to say that the virus is contained. In Ireland it was 4.7% at the beginning of the virus, it's now down to under 1.0 so the virus is therefore contained and would disappear completely quite soon but obviously new cases can emerge due the the nursinghome clusters and especially as we haven't closed our borders. But it does demonstrate that with open borders and no masks, the virus can be contained.

"Planning, preparedness, and infection control can effectively bring an outbreak of a novel, moderate-R_0 disease to a close even in the absence of vaccines," according to Harvard researchers back in March.

Anyway, has the Polish goverment released the R0 number for Poland at any point? In Ireland, the public were told the R0 and the target R0. Obviously it gives people encouragement and keeps spirits up as they see the R0 dropping.
