Admin staff at universities have to go in too. The places haven't been deep-cleaned, plus there are students in and out wanting things stamped or sigbed.

I just got back from the supermarket. They're out of flour (we always keep a decent stock fortunately) and pasta (except for the traditional Polish ones). People were panic-buying bog roll too.

That's why I'm not sure about the logic of the total shutdown - unless there is evidence that it is more than 1-2 cases per town. It is causing a lot of panic that will have lots of bad economic consequences and probably other unintended health consequences

the problem is that by the time you have that many cases the healthcare system will be strained....

the idea is to stop the spread because this particular virus can completely overwhelm a healthcare system pretty quickly (have you seen the reports from Italy?)

It would be very prudent to do what's necessary to prevent that here....

A sensible thing to do. I notice that the travel ban doesn't include the UK (but does include Ireland). I expect there'll be checks on PNR numbers for people flying to the US to ensure that they weren't in mainland Europe, (e.g. Poland or elsewhere not locked down) and are just flying from a UK airport to get round the ban.

One of the TV news stations just said: "In a generation we have not heard an announcement as serious as this from a US president."

It doesn't include Ireland Jon - it's just the 26 members of the Schengen zone. It would be sensible to ban Ireland and UK also as we both have the virus.

There's no danger that people will be able to use the UK or Ireland to travel there after being in a third country; the PNR system shows recent air bookings (plus some rail and hotels) when a passport is scanned.

The various travel bans may well be extended if necessary. Perhaps further restrictions are indeed sensible for now.

Ludicrous panic-buying going on in my part of Warsaw today. Shelves literally empty in Biedronka and Auchan, no meat, no flour, no pasta, no cereals/grains of any kind, no potatoes, no onions, no handwash of course, no toilet paper and visibly dwindling supplies of other non-essential itmes, such as sauces, spices, the list is endless. I saw one man with his trolley piled high with sack upon sack of dog food. Utterly ridiculous behaviour.

It seems that one of the reasons is that fake news was circulating that all shops were going to be closed and people were stupid enough to believe it. So they've basically gone out and created shortages where none needed to exist in the first place.

Sounds you need a cuppa after that :(

Ladies and gentlemen, I have the latest news from confidential sources. And it is bad. If the situation worsens, the PIS government is considering total closure: not only schools but also airports, offices, all commercial facilities etc. The army will be used to man checkpoints within and around cities.

It may happen on 15th March.

I forgot to add: citizens will be bound by law to stay at homes. Only one person in the family will be allowed to go out and collect basic food items at checkpoints held by the army.
