Which is insane since the plan is essentially to let the virus do its worst so that the survivors will get 'herd immunity'....

I think the plan is rather to slow the rate to avoid too much pressure on the health service and make more masks, make more flu medicine etc.

Nothing at the moment but there is a meeting this afternoon that may or may not change that.

That sounds most unlikely as it would be unsustainable and if carried on for long would have a disastrous effect on the country. SMEs would go out of business for a start - and what about the self-employed and B2B contracts?? They're not entitled to any welfare payments and nobody will be paying them a salary.............as Jon says, seems extreme, but then with PIS at the helm, I suppose the usual hysterical approach isn't such a surprise after all.

Logistically it would be a huge undertaking. They may well do something to ensure the supply chain for food shops, however in the end they'll do what is possible and practical.


The bookies are already giving odds on the election being delayed. That would actually be a sensible thing to do, since stability and continuity is essential over the coming weeks/months.

I doubt it is that bad - I think more something like in Italy - shut what you can but keep the country ticking over.

There are not enough army to do that and in any case the easiest way to keep people supplied is to rely on retailers who have locations, trucks, fridges, and experience rather than a bunch of untrained soldiers.

One problem for PiS is they have gone out of their way to punish retailers over the last five years and now will have to eat some humble pie.

Yep, a friend laughed last year when he saw our stores. He said I'd read too much post-apocalyptic fiction. This morning he messaged me to tell me how empty the shops in his part of town are.

Soon the UEFA will announce that the European Championships will be delayed till 2021 (also the Champions League).....

I wonder what will happen with the Eurovision?? Can't see that going ahead as it's usually in May. I suppose they'll have it later in the year. The UK entry goes by the rather unfortunately apt title of 'My Last Breath'!

I and my friends just put signs in my building & lifts ,where most elderly live to call a number for them or ask the porter in Polish to do there chores.My friends will get the calls and we( 3 of my friends) will buy and do the work and deliver free so they can stay in there flats.

Yes, such initiatives are propagated and taken all over Poland.

This is true, it's also suggested that there will be a 5000 PLN fine for breaking the quarantine not sure how this can be enforced

I had a similar experience in a local supermarket here today.
Not quite as bad as you described, but whole aisles were empty.
They mainly went for tissue paper,cleaning products, tinned produce and anything with a long shelf life.
I couldn't even find a tin of tomatoes!
I have never seen this type of panic, not during the Muslim terrorist attacks nor in the IRA days.
Londoners are usually very much, "Don't panic and just carry on as normal",
But this virus has really scared them.
I am no longer throwing newspapers away as we are nearly out of toilet roll......

We are hearing about all the hype but nothing about the actual death numbers.
Here in Michigan we have had TWO reported cases, no deaths and they have closed all sporting events in the entire State !
From pro sports to high school sports.
This shows just how dumbed down the public has become by the media.
People need to get a grip.

Meat, poultry, nions, potatoes, rice, milk all gone today. The rest of the shopping mall was almost empty.

People were snatching the last of the pasta. All that was left was the lurid coloured stuff they sell to tourists in Italy.

What struck me was how deserted the whole place was. Of the few people we saw, several looked ill and were coughing.

This is Armageddon.

Or hopefully people just being safe and staying at home.

Any further news on how Poland is dealing with the virus....how are supermarkets coping....are people aware of what is needed to combat the virus....there does seem to be quite a lot of information around and I think the government by closing schools, universities etc is a good start.....however are the hospitals up to speed with dealing with increasing numbers of patients?

See above. Not ideal, however there's usually something (though today not much meat) if you get there early enough.

Strangely enough, the meat shelves here were as full as normal.
