You guys forget one important factor: a lot of people (and I mean a lot!) in this country are dependent on low prices for food, gas and other goods.


They hire illegals because they can get away with it - simple as that. In the age of shareholder value and corporate greed: everything that helps the bottom line. If the illegal slave labor isn't available anymore they'll probably pay higher wages, but these additional costs will be passed on to the consumer. This is true for food production, but also for all the cheap crap that is manufactured in China. Bring these manufacturing jobs back to the US and consumer prices will go through the roof. Nice little recession guaranteed, because no company will ever accept a profit cut if it doesn't have to.

Wages are naturally much higher in places like NYC or the Bay Area for example. Still, people are often forced to move into the burbs or even further away to find affordable housing. Which is a problem in itself because of the lack of public transport in this country (imagine living in the Blue Mountains and having to commute to downtown Sydney every day by car). If you want to be where the well paying jobs are, you'll also have to be prepared for sky high cost of living. Which essentially eats up the higher wages you earn. Catch 22.

That's simply impossible in my eyes. You cannot reverse the effects of globalization by reopening coal mines. You cannot overcome the rule of the shareholder value. You will not be able to add old-style manufacturing jobs when you're up against automation and worldwide competition. You will not solve the problem with illegal slave labor as long as people are depending on low food prices and at the same time expect everything from iPhones to salad bowls to be dirt cheap.

The only way out is technological progress and education, but tell that some of these dumbass Trump voters. They cheer when King Twitler appoints a bimbo, who thinks that private religious schools are the ultimate solution, as Secretary of Education.
