Clinton lost 53 seats in 1994
Reagan lost 28 seats in 1982

What is weird is the difference in the popular vote - I think the Dems got 12 million more votes in the Senate elections but still "lost" . Obviously I know how the system works but that will eventually become unsustainable - certainly the US is losing its rights to lecture the rest of the world about democracy. I know there are some small states that elect Dems (Montana ? Rhode Isand ?) but most of the benefit of this system goes to Republicans.

Yeah, because if you have a Senate election in CA and in some tiny place like Wyoming, they both have 2 senators. It's completely absurd that financially strong states have the same amount of votes in the Senate as some backwaters.

It made sense 200 years ago, but now it should be proportional to population.
