If this wasn't Manhattan, there'd be a very high probability that this would never make it to trial. Most judges would dismiss these charges--not to mention that most DAs would never have filed these charges in the first place.

Since the charges are felonies, the DA has to be linking this to campaign finance violations; if they were merely falsification of records violations, they'd be misdemeanor charges. So, in effect, the DA would be claiming that NY election law supersedes federal election law. It does not. This case could easily be dismissed simply on lack of jurisdiction.

Remember the Breck girl, John Edwards, and the campaign finance case against him? The case against Edwards was stronger than what appears to be the case against Trump--and Edwards was acquitted. If I remember correctly, the money paid to the woman Edwards had a child with came directly from his campaign--that's not the case with Trump.

If this goes to trial, the Trump haters will be happy for a brief period of time, as I think there's a good chance Trump will be convicted by a politically hostile jury, but he'll win on appeal.

How this will affect Trump as a candidate is going to be interesting. What isn't interesting but exceedingly sad is how this will create even deeper divisions and ill-will within the American body politic. Add this to many other developments in our culture and my inveterate optimistic heart is beset with a pall of pessimism at the locus of the country...it's as if we're entering a sort of dark ages.
