There is nothing specifically Christian, or even religious, as commonly understood about them. You correctly identified them as a cult and this one has at its heart a loathing of the Catholic Church larger than its supposed love of Jesus. Normal reformed faiths don't have this neantherdal aspect which almost always coincides with grifting. The tearful tele evangelist apologising for embezzlement, adultery or paedophelia springs to mind when I hear the word evangelical.


There are very few American haters here, I may despise what passes for American culture and politics but don't hate Americans. Others are a lot easier on your obvious decline.

MAGA evangelicals and their like are a weird cult. I know cos I have had to deal with them my entire life. They hate Catholics, gays, socialists, women, mothers, children...the list is endless. What normal people think of as evangelical is a nutter with a loudhailer or speaker system. Most people find them annoying or distracting at best but if you listen to what they are saying you realise they are insane.

Rightwing religious conservatives (of whatever denomination) do have a very strange understanding of the core principles of Christianity. The MAGA ones are people who seem to jump through a lot of hoops to reinterpret faith. Some of them are very much like what Islamists are to Islam.

I have some sympathy for the ones out in the boondocks however sadly some of the 'national prayer breakfast' ones and the truly awful ones around Bush (who are presumably still around) cannot so easily be excused.

No no no. Most Evangelical Christians are quiet and relatively normal. It's only the loud few that annoy and that is the same with any religion, The political ones, a sort of Protestant version of medieval Caesaropapism are however very dangerous right now.

Not talking about your average Methodist, Quaker, Presbyterian, C of I Moravian etc. evangelicals to me are a man, occasionally a woman, with an axe to grind and a credit card bill to pay off. They will exploit the needy emotionally and financially. I am not their biggest fan.

Near as damnit Methodist but a bit more chilled and less cliquey.

I grew up very near Epworth where the founder of Methodism was born and don't have the highest opinion of some of the suburban Methodists I've met. Others were nice, mostly rural ones.

Nor am I though most I've known have been more or less OK and some have been wonderful. Only a few were a drag to be around.

Being from a place where they're thick on the ground, it has a specific meaning to me. It's low church (the church as a building or instituion aren't important what's important is an individual "relationship" with Christ) and individualistic (see preceeding) and based on personal interpretation of scripture (which RC and Orthodox don't pay a lot of attention to).

I've known some evangelicals and at a one to one level most are wonderful people who believe some nutty things. The less appealing side is performative and weaponized piety but that's not nearly as common in real life as it is in some people's imagination.

I've only seen the first season but the Righteous Gemstones is a nice non-condescending portrayal (the show runner was from that environment and knows the strengths and weaknesses). The Gemstones are often venal and fail to live up to their ideals but when they're lost (often) their faith can lead them to a better place.
